At 3 weeks post op, sex can resume?

My Dr. saw me at one week post op, removed my staples from my incision. He said I could resume sex and drive at the 3 week mark. He told me not to come back for 4 months. I am nervous about sex at the 3 week mark. Nothing has been checked inside and it looks like most of you have 6-8 week time frames for sex to resume. Anybody else get a green light so soon? I had a TAH, kept the ovaries.

since your cervix was removed and you have stitches at the top of your vagina that need to heal, i dont know that having sex at 3 weeks post op is a good idea. (i got released at two weeks but i kept my cervix) i'd be afraid of infection or tearing something. just do what you are most comfortable with. just because he released you, doesnt mean you have to do anything.

Re: At 3 weeks post op, sex can resume?

Had TAH on 4/6/09 and was told in no uncertain terms "no sex for at least 6 weeks". I am a nurse so multiple MD's, PA's and ARNP's had to have their sayso and it was all pretty much the same - at least 6 weeks. Maybe your doc meant sexual contact, just not intercourse. Might be good to ask again or even get a second opinion.

Maybe your doctor forgot that he removed your cervix? Perhaps he did not look through your notes thoroughly enough to remember before he entered the exam room. That is awfully early to resume sex.

Re: At 3 weeks post op, sex can resume?

I did the "do" at 3 weeks, and I am okay. I had a tah w/ bso. My doctor checked me and said all of my sutures had dissolved, and it was okay to do it. Although he advised me I would have muscle pain after. Well, I was anxious to try out the new gear. And I did pay in way of pain the next day.

Re: At 3 weeks post op, can resume?

Thanks for all the input. I did ask my Dr. again and he said yes, 3 weeks is fine to resume . I am still nervous, not only afraid it will hurt, but afraid of infection or not being healed inside. My husband was there too, he heard it, so you know what he is thinking!! I am thinking WAIT longer!
Thanks ladies

I had a SAH and my doc said "nothing in the vagina for 4 weeks". Had my post op check yesterday and said 2 more weeks.

Well, FWIW, here's my two cents on the matter...

There are two things that have to happen before it's OK to resume sex. First, the has to say it's OK. Then (and here's the important part) YOU have to say it's OK.

When I had my hysterectomy, my doctor gave me the go-ahead for sexual intercourse at 5-1/2 weeks. But I didn't feel ready. I didn't say that, but I asked DH about it, and he said he repeated what he'd said to me a few weeks earlier... he was not interested in sex until we could *both* enjoy the experience. In other words, until I was ready, he wasn't ready. At somewhere between the 7 and 8-week mark, we resumed our intimate life.

This is an area where you are in the driver's seat, so to speak. Until you feel physically and emotionally prepared, the experience isn't going to be good anyway. Don't do it just to get it over with or just to stop your husband from nagging. Not a good plan.

As for your doctor's restrictions, they really do vary from doc to doc. I've seen where some doctors say 2 weeks, some 4 weeks, some 6 weeks, and some even longer depending on healing and other issues.

But as I said earlier, until BOTH you and your say it's OK to resume relations, it's too soon IMHO.

Re: At 3 weeks post op, sex can resume?

I was delayed for close to 12 weeks because vaginal cuff was slow healing. IMHO 3 weeks seems early, especially since the DR didn't do an internal...exactly how does he know it's healed?????

Also when you resume go slow. Some women say they only allow partial penetration and build up to full penetration. I think that is a good way to look at it. Trying to go back right away to the way it was before is asking a bit much of all the parts that are healed.

Remember this 3 week mark is initial recovery in no way are you fully recovered yet. I'm just starting to feel like I'm getting there and I'm 6 months out.

Re: At 3 weeks post op, sex can resume?

I know where you are coming from. I had a TAH on 27th April and had my 3 week check up with my Dr on Tuesday who also advised that I could now have sex (and drive and do everything else of living) but to take it really slow. Your body will tell you when it has had enough.

Feeling like a teenager again, I was concerned but excited, I did it BUT took things very slow (more sensual!) and have not had any problems.

It will depend on you as well, if you feel comfortable and you have the green light then go for it but YOU HAVE TO FEEL COMFORTABLE!
