Appendix Taken Out

Sorry if someone has already asked this....

But during a TAH, if you still have your appendix, do they take them out?

I was just thinking about this and was wondering.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Appendix Taken Out

I asked my doctor if she was going to take my appendix out, I had a SAH, and she told me it wasn't recommended anymore...so I still have mine.

Re: Appendix Taken Out

Hmmmmm...... I thought that it was a law that if you were opened up and still have them that the doctor had to take them out..... oh well who knows anymore with the laws changing all the time for medicial procedures.

Re: Appendix Taken Out

I wanted mine to come out when I had my TAH, as it was surgery number 8 on my abdomen. My dod would not do it unless the appendix looked like it needed to come out. He said that anymore they do not take a healthy organ out just because they are in there, as it causes more problems post op. Funny thing is, my doc told me my appendix was the healthiest one he had seen in a long while...murphy's law of course is that I will have appendicitis 6 months after I am totally healed from my TAH.

Re: Appendix Taken Out

I had a tah/bso and still have my appendix. My dr said that they were not removed unless there was a reason to. You could ask your dr about it and know for sure what to expect.

Re: Appendix Taken Out

I didn't even realize that they would even look at your appendix, but when I saw the doctor after the operation, he said he checked my appendix and it looked good, so they left it.

Re: Appendix Taken Out

Mine was taken out, which I requested as long as I was having surgery. It turned out to be a good thing because I had endo on it.

Re: Appendix Taken Out

My doctor told me that he would take a look at my appendix and if it looked like it needed to come out he would take it out. I had a TAH and I still have my appendix. He told me after surgery that the appendix looked fine so he left it in.
