donating bllod for your surgery

I donate blood all the time. I wanted to donate for myself for my surgery but the told me no because it is too close. I had planned and booked a tentative appointment for donating on the 8th and my surgery isnt until the 17th. Did anyone else have difficulty donating to themself for surgery?

Re: donating bllod for your surgery

I asked my doctor about this yesterday and she said that since I haven't had a string of surgeries/medical procedures that have depleted my blood supply (or at least I think that's what she meant) that I shouldn't worry about it. She also left it up to me if I wanted to, but said that they (or at least her office/the hospital) liked to do it at least 3 weeks in advance, so if I wanted to, I needed to contact the hospital ASAP. Since she wasn't worried, I wasn't and decided not to.

Re: donating bllod for your surgery

I asked about it at my pre-op yesterday and was told of course that I didn't have enough time but that the likeyhood of me needing blood was very slim.

to you!!!!

Re: donating bllod for your surgery

I was told I only had enough time to donate one pint of blood and doctor only does transfusions if you need two pints. Thus, I would have needed a donated pint with my own. So, I did not donate.

And yes, I did end up with two pints of donated blood for my transfusion!
