Still in pain!!!! Out of Pain meds

Okay so I got home Wednesday after LAVH, was still hurting alot. My insurance would not cover the strength of my originally prescription so I had to go to a medication that was not as strong. Felt better on Sat and Sun therefor I over did it ALOT. Ran out of pain meds on monday called the drs office for a refill but they told me to take motrin which I already was in between my pain med doses. I took the medication exactly as told but now my doc won't refill my pain med prescription and am still hurting. especially were my incision was and the area that my overies were. Does anybody have any advice? I've been resting and taking it easy since this past weekend.

Re: Still in pain!!!! Out of Pain meds

So sorry you're hurting so bad. You unfortunately have learned a lesson the really hard way. Many doctors will not renew pain medication. Do you have a family doctor you can call? Continue with the Motrin or aleve and also tylenol as long as it is ok for you to take. You can also use moist heat and cold pacs. If you feel your pain is increased because you over did it, you should start to feel better in a couple of more days of rest.
If the pain increases or you start to have other symptoms (read discharge instructions) make sure you call the doctor. If the pain really gets beyond what you can cope with you can go to the ER.
Just make sure you don't take more than daily limits of tylenol especially.
Continue to rest and when your feeling better take everything slow. Your body will sometimes delay telling you your pushing it.
take care

Re: Still in pain!!!! Out of Pain meds

Hi Chevychik,
Sorry to hear you are still in so much pain : ) I'm glad to hear you are resting and taking it easy. I hope that means you're off your feet and peole are waiting on YOU! Call your doctor again and tell him/her exactly how you are feeling. If they don't refill the perscription you can ask what else you can take because the Motrin is not cutting it. You can also ask for more of a dose. You can also ask to be seen by the doctor if you think the pain is excessive. Either way don't be afraid to talk to your doctor or nurses about concerns you may have. This is the time to TAKE CARE OF YOU! You need to heal correctly the first time so there are no complications. Good luck! Keep resting and don't be afraid to keep asking for what you need.

Re: Still in pain!!!! Out of Pain meds

I agree with Lori!

Personally, I don't think you should look at it as a "lesson learned" situation only. Did you overdo it? Probably. That doesn't mean you deserve to be in pain if Motrin doesn't do it. Try just the Motrin with warm compresses (if you can't take a warm bath yet) and if you are miserable tonight, call your doc back. You can also alternate Tylenol and Motrin - I did one then the other every three hours (motrin - 3 hrs later - tylenol - 3 hrs later Motrin, etc.)

Part of healing right is feeling well enough to be up and about. It's ridiculous that the doc is refusing to give you more pain meds. As long as you don't have a history of addiction, then you should be made comfortable (not that someone with addictions shouldn't be, just don't know how those situations are handled.)

Best of luck, hope you get your pain under control and take it easy!!

is meant to be pampered.

Re: Still in pain!!!! Out of Pain meds

Just to clarify, I did not mean my comment regarding a lesson learned as being punitive. It is just that I myself have learned first hand many doctors will not prescribe pain medication past the first post-op week. Strict governmental regulations have many doctors afraid to prescribe narcotics. I think the discrepancy is somewhat regional. It seems like some women have no problems getting pain medication for weeks and weeks while others have a terrible time having their pain regulated.
In hind site the only other suggestions/question I have is did you clearly explain to the doctor you overdid activities this past weekend. That may make a difference. Also narcotic prescription often will not be refilled over the phone. If your still in pain tomorrow try to get in to see the doctor.

Re: Still in pain!!!! Out of Pain meds

Sorry, hope09 - I didn't mean to imply anything bad. It's just that some people have little pain, even with major surgeries, while others have a lot of pain with more minor ones. I've seen women invaildate what others are feeling, but not necessarily intending to come off as unkind.

Just like with endo, as one of my wise docs told me early on - the amount of endo does not necessarily mirror the level of pain or infertility - it's all a bit of a mystery.

And you are probably right - it might very well be regional. I just know that my doc stressed for me to take my pain meds so I would get up and move around - move my bowels, reduce the risk of blood clots, etc. Not to mention risk of depression (which I got anyway!!)

Re: Still in pain!!!! Out of Pain meds

I am allergic to codeine, was discharged on Darvon. It's non-narcotic. My doc DID renew my prescription.
Maybe you can call and ask for something non-narcotic?

Re: Still in pain!!!! Out of Pain meds

Toradol is an anti inflamatory and they should have NO reason to NOT call that at the veyr least in for you.
Sometimes the resceptionist does not talk to the doctor, so you would probally be best to get in tomarrow to SEE the doctor, that way u can explain face to face what u r feeling. Or ask for the Doctor to call u before noon tomarrow and then send someone to pick up the script for you (most narcotics can not be called in). Good luck, i hope u feel better!

Re: Still in pain!!!! Out of Pain meds

shannon - some surgeons hate Toradol. I don't know why, but I got one dose in the hospital to handle a pain crisis, but the doc on call told me my surgeon would NOT allow me to have anymore...believe it or not I was given vicodin instead.

Re: Still in pain!!!! Out of Pain meds

Darvon is a narcotic and I think there are warnings to watch for suicidal tendencies in patients taking it. FDA recommended banning this substance entirely.

There are many narcotic and non-narcotic pain relievers that may work, or may not work. I happen to be allergic to narcotics and can't take most NSAIDS due to an underlying disorder and try other non-pharmaceutical things- meditation, guided imagery, breathing techniques, etc....

Sometimes all it takes is a cup of earl grey tea and some deep breathing to bring pain to a tolerable level.

I am sure there are other options, I just am not familiar with them.

I do hope that you get some good pain relief soon and if it continues, INSIST on seeing the MD right away, as prolonged pain can be a sign of something not quite right.

Happy healing my hyster sister!!
