Are bladder infections common post-op?

I have the LAVH and bladder sling surgery on 6/2/09. On 6/8, I was in the doctor's office because it was hurting to urinate and I could see blood in my urine. They called me today to let me know that I had a bladder infection. I was already on antibiotics just in case it was an infections. I am curious if many of you have had bladder infections after having a hysterectomy or bladder sling surgery. Is this normal? Will this become something regular?

Re: Are bladder infections common post-op?

I had a bladder infection about a week after my hysterectomy. It hurt so bad. I thought someone was ripping my bladder out every time I peed. I would cry, and grab the wall and hold on as tight as I could, I guess I thought it was gonna help! I did have a catheter for over 24 hours, and did have a horrible nurse the night they took it out, she did not drain it before leaving her shift and the bag was so full urine was backing back up in me, and it started to burn. I think that is why I got mine. I usually always get one after a catheter, though, so even without the backing up I am sure I would have gotten one. I have not had one since. I wish you luck, and take your meds like your doctor ordered, it will help. Drink lots of cranberry juice also.

I think that with most surgeries, they put a catheter in your bladder and any time they do that , you run the risk of getting a UTI. I had one that came on very strong at about a week and a half after my surgery, causing me fevers up to 102. I think that it is finally on the mend now.
Good Luck

I also had a bladder infection beginning 10 days after LAVH. It was very painful. Are all your symptoms gone? If not let the doctor know.
UTI can frequently occur after hysterectomy. The catheter is often to blame. Feel better soon.

Re: Are bladder infections common post-op?

I got two bladder infections after surgery and this was while I was already on the 1 per day antibiotic they sent me home from the hospital with (macrobid.) I was on a catheter and I agree that the catheter makes UTI's much more likely. I've been doing fine though since then so I don't think just because you've had one UTI that means you'll necessarily keep getting them.

I'm sorry you're experiencing this but urinary tract infections aren't unusual following this surgery, I'm afraid.

Have you found our <link> Post-Op Page yet? It's packed with information, including several bladder articles and one on this very subject, too: Bladder Infection After Hysterectomy. Please don't hesitate to contact your doctor again if things don't improve.

Sending all good wishes for a smooth recovery!

Re: Are bladder infections common post-op?

I never had an infection but it seemed like I did. It was explained to me that the bladder was moved & held back during the surgery & it took me at least 4 weeks for it to start to act normal again. Hang in there.

Re: Are bladder infections common post-op?

Aloha! I too had a bladder infection after my vag-hys and the pain was pretty excrutiating especially since I starting feeling the pain from this the week following discharge. The urinating does get better over time, hang in there for now and try to increase cranberry juice intake. :-)
