hormone replacement: confused

I am going to be getting a TAH/ BSO ( endo/ lupus) and of course my doc said I'll need some combo of hormones afterwards.
I haven't started much research on this yet, the only thing I'm adamant about is not using premarin or any type that uses pregnant mare urine in it.
I am 40, so haven't started any natural menopausal symptoms yet - I would greatly appreciate any wise advice/ suggestions from the hystersisters on what worked for them- creams, pills, etc. I know everyone is different, but I love to research a lot first and your information would be sooooo appreciated!

Re: hormone replacement: confused

Hi

First, I want to pat you on the back for wanting to research. Information is good.

Here is a link to the Hormone Quick Reference Guide that gives the source of the hormones which are used. While some estrogens are derived from pregnant mare urine, there are no estrogens which contain urine of any kind. For many women, Premarin is the only estrogen which helps them feel well.

You can find much more information in the Hormone Resources

Have you also checked out our Endo Support forum?

Of course, we are here to help you with any questions you may have.

I started the Vivelle dot patch 3 days post-op. The first week, I was miserable with hot flashes and night sweats, but now (2 weeks 1 day post op) things are calming down. I still have hot flashes, but not as frequent and I still have night sweats.

I like using the patch so far. I have always been bad about remembering to take pills. Instead of remembering to take a pill everyday, I only have to remember to change the patch out twice a week. This has made it a lot easier for me to remember. I'm not sure how they did it, but the adhesive is also user friendly. I generally have sensitivity to adhesives such as medical tape and band aids. I have not had any irritation from the patch yet. I believe that this is the HRT for me.

with all of your research and talk to your about your choices. Between the two of you, I'm sure you will find the HRT that is right for you.
