postponing surgery - charley horse on rectocele, ow

Hello All,

I've been lurking for a few weeks and am in awe of all of the info an support on this site. I am scheduled for a lap supracervical hysterectomy, removing ovaries, bladder sling and anterior and posterior repairs.

I am 41, 2 vag deliveries 8 and 9 years ago, neither easy. 1st daughter was 25 weeks with 5 days of contractions - she was 1 lb 11 oz. Had a cerclage for the 2nd. She was full term after months of bed rest and crazy drugs but I had 3rd degree tears.. I had a hernia on the perineum the day after delivering the 2nd but never went in for a checkup.

I have been in menopause for 4 years and take estrogen/prometrium. I decided to get checked out in April when my periods became too frequent, i.e., 4 days/month without PMS :-(.

Diagnosed after a uterine biopsy and ultrasound with prolapse, cystocele, rectocele. Biopsy results were normal, I'd been taking too much estrogen. I haven't been well since the biopsy. Sitting at work was agony (in front of a computer for 6 hours a day). It has progressed to the point of constant pain where (I guess) the rectocele has a charley horse (Dr's words) and I can't find a comfortable position. Area aching and sharp pains from belly button down to top of right thigh, front and back. Wish my heating pad was bigger!

After examining me yesterday, my GYN loudly cancelled the surgery and referred me to a Proctologist. He also gave me steroids and Lyrica, which has made me sick as a dog. His nurse and I have kept the date, hoping that the Procotologist's results will not interfere with my scheduled date.

I suppose I'm hoping to hear from others who have had similar experiences or have suggestions for me. My office thinks I'm nuts and I've only just understood my anatomy in the last few months via Google. Southern ladies are not educated in these areas!

Thanks for listening,

I don't have any experiences to share with you but am sending good wishes that your pain will ease up soon

I hope that you get good news from the Procotologist and things can proceed for you.

I do understand your situation! I highly recommend you make that appointment with a Proctologist AND make one with a URO-gynocologist (another specialist). It sounds as though you have a rectal prolapse which is completely different then a rectocele. The Proctologist fixes the rectal prolapse and the uro-gyn fixes all the other pelvic disorders - (they are specialist).

I had a battery of test, and had a small (just starting rectal prolapse along with a cystocele, rectocele, and uterus and vaginal prolapse. I just had surgery 3 months ago, and almost all is fixed... except I am still howing issues with my bowels - which I think is because of living years (20) with all these damages and not seeking help. I now have an appointment with a Proctologist and I am facing another major surgery to remove some of my colon (which is too long, and often results in rectal prolapses, and it is twisted). I can't help but think I wish I had went to a Proctologist first about the rectum and then saw the uro-gyn.. it was maybe possible to combine both surgeries.

In any event.. I know it is scary! My rectum bulging out really freaked me out and it was the reason I finally sought help! In most all cases it is NOT an emergency, just a quality of life issue... so my best advise is to seek out a couple doctors (specialists - the Proctologist and the Urogynocologist), research and make the best decision you can.

Best wishes!
