currently in the hospital and need some advice...

Hi, I was admitted to the hospital on Thursday after another 3 days of acute pain following the insertion of an Mirena IUD. Back up 2 years...rushed to ER due to severe lower abdomen pain, 3 times over the course of 3 months. Was followed up at womens health clinic and was told that I had a small uterine fibroid and an ovarian cyst. Nothing that should cause too much pain. Fast forward 2 years...3 weeks ago, ended up in the ER 3 times over the course of the week...was told that fibroid was larger and would probably eventually need a hysterectomy but in the meantime i was told i should go off the pill and try the IUD. I had several tests...MRI, Barium Anema (showing a mass pushing against the bowels) and also that I probably have IBS. Have been off of work for the last 3 weeks due to the pain - have been on medication and havent been much use around at all. Since this Tuesday Ive had severe pain.
So in the ER this past Thursday the resident said i obviously had some pain but it couldnt be due to the fibroid , must be an infection from the IUD. THey admitted me and put me on antibiotics for the last 2 days. No change except that the small infrection i had went down but it was probably just because of the initial insertion. Today they tell me taht they dont think its the fibroid...its only 5 cm and the cyst is only 5 cm and its only resting on my bowel and in his opinion is definitely not enough to cause this severe pain. He told me i shouldnt have the IUD because the fibroid seems to have pushed it out slightly and they removed it. They basically said they dont feel that i should be getting a hysterectomy now. For sure eventually but at this moment its not enough of an emergency. I cant walk, am taking super duper strong drugs that apparently can cause even more symptoms...i freaked out. Told the doctors to ignore the shouldnts and should be listening to me tell them how much pain im in.

Re: In the hospital NOW and could really use some advice

Be strong.
Keep telling them how you feel and the intensity on a 1-10 scale. They have to listen to you if you keep it up. I am sorry you are having to go thru this! I feel for you. I am no doc. but I would keep at them for a H if I were you...if not now at some point.
Do you have a obgyn? Is he involved? What does he/she say? They know you best. Do you have family to be your advocate? They must listen to you!
I'll be thinking about you and hoping that your pain will soon subside...
You are not alone.

Re: currently in the hospital and need some advice...

Have they considered your pain is from ovarian torsion caused by the cyst. I had severe intermittent pain last year and finally had an emergency lap because nothing was showing up on testing to justify the level of pain I was experiencing. It was a paratubal cyst causing intermittent ovarian torsion. Have you had ultrasounds? Get copies of all reports and have them closely compared to the current. My pain went on for months misdiagnosed because on ultrasound never look very large but it did change location, type and size. I guess no one really compared studies because it seemed so innocent. Also maybe ask for an exploratory lap. before OKing a hyst. for fibroids.

ive been telling them i range from a 6 early on in the day to a 8-9 at night. i saw an obgyn after the last time i came to the ER. She saw me here and then suggested the IUD as pain management until the hysterectomy surgeon could see me. My family doctor actually sent me back to the ER after the last time I saw him because of the rebound and pain i was still having. My husband (thank god) works in this exact hospital so sees this kind of thing often and stood by my side yesterday when i had this chat with my doctor

The obgyn thinks i should have a hysterectomy too...so did the doctor yesterday. Said i probably should have had it a long time ago but this time around he cant see where something is cuasing me so much pain that it would be an emergency to perform surgery.

So now i am not on the pill because i started the IUD this week and cant be on the IUD because apparently the fibroid doesnt like it so now i have to (according to this arrogant doctor) manage the pain. In this case that means Naprocen twice a day and rivacocet. Then he tells me i shouldnt be taking any narcotics cuase that could cause irritation in my gut making my irritable bowel syndrome worse. GAHHH!!! so frustrated

Hi there,

Keep pushing at them. If you know something is wrong then there is!!!!! See if someone will do a lap to go in and check things out that is what I had to do and lone behold my ovary was mush by the time they got in there because they wouldn't listen to me and I begged them to go in and have a look... This happened to me not once but twice in a month period.... Has anyone checked you for a hernia yet??????

i had another ultrasound yesterday...the sonographer seemed to see right away why i would be in so much pain. ovarian cyst and fibroid and at the time the iud seemed to be quite crowded. apparently something is also putting some pressure on my bowel. No torsion that they could see. No degenerative fibroid. blood flow was good. They said they compared them to the last time i was seen at the womens health center in 2006 and nothing has changed. Each time theyve told me they are bigger. not much but bigger. The functional cyst has been there all this time as well. Is that normal - i was on the pill and from what i understand a functional cyst that gets big should shrink down after a couple of cycles. Obviously this one has been there since 2006.
severe aches and sharp pains in my middle abdomen...pain down the front of my legs and my lower back. scaling on a s6-9 throughout the day. Can hardly walk. Am totally exhausted from the last 3 weeks of this and then the intense intense pain from the last 5 days. The doctor yesterday made me feel like i was exaggerating. He made me feel like they didnt believe me. I asked my husband if i sounded like a ranting loonie and he siad i was great. Doctors shouldnt make you feel this way - i even asked him about that. I live in Canada and we pay alot for our health care system...i cant believe that their ultimate goes seems to be toget me out of here instead of making me better.
