Surgery at the end of July

My surgery is July 30th and I am really nervous about being put under. The only time ive been in the hospital was to have my children. Any advice on how to try and stop worrying so much. I'm a wreck! Im 40 and I am having the Da Vinci hysterectomy keeping my ovaries.

Re: Surgery at the end of July

I completely understand and I think it's one of the things that we all worry about. When I had my tubal several yrs ago, my gyn said she almost cancelled cause my BP was so high. I was terrified that I wouldn't wake up. When I did wake in the recovery room, I swear I was almost giddy with delight. Not only had I survived, I felt fantastic. Honestly, not nauseated, no pain..nothing! I had a partial thyroidectomy 3 yrs ago and had the fear again but a little less. Still my BP was high while waiting and again, I woke up elated to be alive and in no pain and have no nausea. I'm praying with all my might that I'm as lucky this time but I'm still nervous. If you read some of the posts from the women who've had surgery recently, it might make you feel better.

Thanks Catarina. Looks like your surgery is 10 days before mine. Maybe you will be able to give me some tips before I go in. Are you having a Da Vinci?

I wish I was having the Da Vinci but no, I'm having the toughest one - a TAH. I very much hope to report back here that I'm alive and doing well soon after my surgery

Re: Surgery at the end of July

I did find this online somewhere recently (thought it was good news cause I'm a chronic gum chewer)

Researchers in America seem to have discovered that simply chewing gum after abdominal surgery can help get the bowels functioning more quickly than might otherwise be the case. They found that in a small study of just 34 patients, those that chewed gum passed gas much more quickly than those that did not. They also seemed to have a first bowel movement much more quickly. And on average, chewers got out of hospital in 4.3 days; while those not chewing were left for 6.8 days.

ETA - I mistakenly posted this here but meant it for a different thread (re: gas pain)- my apologies.

Re: Surgery at the end of July

I was nervous at my first procedure in May. I was put under for the first time in my life. My heart rate was high because of my nervousness just waiting for the doctor and the anesthesiologist. I took DEEP breaths closed my eyes and went to paradise... it worked! Before I knew it the anesthesiologist was there and giving me something before the anesthesia which put me on cloud 9. Before i knew it he injected the anesthesia and i was OUT! woke up in my room an hour later! Good luck on your Davinci Hysterectomy. Mine is July 10th, I am nervous as well!

Re: Surgery at the end of July

We can be nervous together ... my surgery is July 8th and I'm going tomorrow for my pre-op appointments (dr and hospital).

Sending lots of good and calming thoughts to you.

Re: Surgery at the end of July

I have been put under several times (4 to be exact). I do get nauseous from the anesthesia, so they always prep me. I agree though that it is super scary that first time. They should give you something to relax you once they get the IV in, and that will help a bit. If they give you versed, it also has an amnesia effect.

I love becca's idea of just closing your eyes and relaxing. Sending calming vibes your way. I still worry a bit about being put under because everything is so out of my control, and that always bothers me.
