Post-OP Ovarian Cyst - OUCH!!!

Hey all. . I had a TAH 6/23/09. I was able to keep my ovaries.... maybe they should have gone too.. I just had my 2 week check up last Wed and all was well. Then, Monday I had exploding pain in my left side. I was able to get into see my right away - he worked me over good with a pelvic exam.... (and I thought I was sore before.)Anyway, scheduled an ultrasound for the next morning and found a cyst on my left ovarie.....how depressing. Has anyone experienced this? My doc says it should go away on it's own and that rarely has he had to intervene. My mother-in-law's sister said she took pills to help disolve hers. Right now I'm on percaset to help with the pain if I need it but I don't want to keep taking pain pills.

Hello Equinegrl....

I'm with you sister. I had the TAH on 06/19th, uterus and cervix removed, both ovaries remained as per Dr, these were "healthy" ovaries and there was nothing wrong with them. I am almost 4 weeks post-op (will be on Friday, 07/17th) and just like you, both ovaries now show some abnormalities, cysts.

On 07/10th, I had an appt for a full body scan and left ov has solid mass while rt ov has some sort of fluid mass. I am in no pain but at times I feel a sharp pain in my abdomen but nothing I couldn't handle. I am scheduled to see my Dr and in the meantime, I am on that "wait and see" period. I have am prepared for whatever happens next; if both ovaries need to be removed, I am fine with that.

I chose to live life in possibility and hopefulness, focusing on all the reasons why I should be joyful and grateful. Life is still GREAT!

I wish you the best and hope that your aches will go away. I will update you on my status, I will keep you in my prayers.

Princess, thought it may be hard to say this, but, we cannot afford to put any stress in our lives because you and I know that stress is one of the worst things we can do while we are trying to heal ourselves. Let's prepare ourselves for whatever needs to be done to our ovaries and for now, we think perfect thoughts as we will be fine.

I am 46 and we have one child, Josh who will be 19 and will be a soph in the Fall. You and I will be better no matter what we are faced with. Take care!

Re: Post-OP Ovarian Cyst - OUCH!!!

I had a similar thing happen - had my TAH on June 16th, left both ovaries as they were healthy. Two weeks later, I was in severe pain and thought I had a kidney infection. When I got in to the doc, he did the whole exam (pelvic, ultrasound, mashing on my belly - I wanted to kick him. Hard.) and found a 5 cm cyst on my left ovary. He said they mostly go away on their own and to come back in a week and we'll see how it goes.

The next week I went back and he repeated the ultrasound in his office. It looked smaller on his machine, but still wanted to get a better idea of what it was, so he sent me to radiology for a transvaginal ultrasound. That was a lot of fun, let me tell you (not). I was in ultrasound for about 45 minutes, between the transvaginal and the abdominal.

The diagnosis was a complicated adnexal mass, about 10 cm in diameter. He was unable to tell if it really was an ovarian cyst, a hematoma, a hydrosalpinx (a collection of blood and fluid in my tube) or something else. He said we could wait it out, but that only one of those would resolve on it's own. He also gave me the option of exploratory laparoscopy to see exactly what it was and to remove it. Since I didn't really want to prolong all of this (wait for two weeks to see and end up needing the surgery anyway), we scheduled the exploratory lap for the next week.

So, the next week, he does the laparoscopy and finds that he can't continue. What was supposed to be a 30-45 minute procedure turned into a 6+ hour surgery. He had to reopen my incision, remove the ovary and tube because they had grown around my ureter and attached to my colon, consult with urology to ensure he didn't damage my ureter (which involved contrast dye and a CT - the dye left me with dark blue urine for a few hours after I woke up, which was rather disconcerting), and consult with internal medicine and general surgery to ensure he didn't damage my colon (got a colonoscopy, too - yay! Glad I was asleep for that one).

So, I basically had major abdominal surgery twice in two months. I've been either in surgery, in the hospital or at home recovering from surgery for just about two months now and I'm sick of it. I'll also probably be going on birth control pills to prevent myself from growing any more cysts on my remaining ovary.

I also developed two hematomas in my incision last week - my incision was reopened yet again (though not totally, just enough to clean out the hematomas), irrigated, and I've had gauze taped on my incision to keep myself from bleeding all over my clothes. I also have developed an allergy to adhesive through all of this. The final diagnosis appears to be a hemorrhagic ovarian cyst (it started out as a cyst, but also collected a bunch of blood), but I won't know for sure until I go back for my 4 week follow up visit - he hadn't gotten the pathology report back before I left the hospital and I didn't think to ask him about it the other day.

So, long story short, keep an eye on it, but don't be afraid to ask for a reevaluation if you're still in pain in a week or two. My situation would not have resolved on its own, and I'd probably still be in pain now, and wouldn't have any idea what was going on. Good luck to you.

Re: Post-OP Ovarian Cyst - OUCH!!!

oh you poor thing! i'm so sorry to hear you had so many issues. i'm in the same boat though. i've had 5 cycts on my left ovary and 4 on the right, or somthing like that. i forget. poor things look like popcorn balls!
i had gotten mine because i had a procedure done (essure) where they incert rods into your tubes to prevent pregnency. its supposted to be the latest and greatest thing sense sliced bread. well, doc didn't tell me that they were made out of nickle, which i'm illergic to, and she didnt do the procedure correctly: shoved the deployment tube all the way up to my overies and then deployed into my overies and not into my tubes causing extreem pain and several cycts.

thankfully after a LAVH my new doctor proformed he was able to save my overies on both sides, but they both still have puckles (is that even a word?) of cycts on them. they feel better though and i think i might just keep them. although after surgery they took a little break from producing all the chemicals that i need, but seem to be back into production now.

again i hope your feeling better and just make sure you get the rest you need. i know how you feel though being stuck in pain for a long time. i've been down now for three months and i just want to get out of the house and go for a walk! allas... i have to wait till friday when i see my doc again to get the all clear. my poor mother, i think i'm driving her batty!

peace and wellness

Re: Post-OP Ovarian Cyst - OUCH!!!

Sheera - I feel for you . It is very scary when you get pains after the surgery as you can't see what is going on and the first thing you think of is trouble. Good thing you opted to do the lap right away. Hopefully after all you've been through you will be on your way to getting better. Right now I'm struggleing with the bloated stomach that I hope will go away soon. Hang in there and get better. Keep us posted on your recovery!!
