Anemia post-op. How common?

At my 1 wk post-op today, I found out I was a little anemic. No biggie, they said, it's common. Eat lots of fruit, raisins, etc., etc. I don't remember hearing about this, and I thought I'd read EVERYTHING I could get my hands on. So really, how common is anemia?

Re: Anemia post-op. How common?

There are different type of "anemia" Iron, potassium, B-12, calcium, but it sounds like if your doctor told you to eat raisins it may be iron. I have a B-12 anemia known a pernicious anemia and a calcium anemic. Anemia is common in that our bodies either are not getting enough of something or our bodies can't digest food properly to get the benefit from a food source as in a B-12 deficiency. Taking your doctors advice then asking for another blood test in a few months will often correct the issue, if not you may need to delve deeper for a cause. But it's often nothing to worry about.

Re: Anemia post-op. How common?

Simba,
It is common for the hemoglobin count to drop after surgery. A lot of us sisters here have dealt with heavy bleeding, which contributes to the anemia. If you have been bleeding a lot, it is no surprise that you are anemic. My doctor is having me take OTC iron pills (Slow FE); he says that the OTC ones are just as good as the prescription iron pills now. You may want to ask about taking an OTC iron pill to help with your anemia in addition to eating iron-rich foods.

and my surgeon pointed out that whenthey remove a uterus, it has lots of blood in it -- so that can also contribute, especially if you were borderline before.
