Four years after my hysterectomy, and still painful sex!!!

This is awful. It was ok for a while, because I was avoiding men who were well-endowed. But I just started seeing a man, and we were getting along great...until our first time together. He is only a little bigger than average, I think, but I was in so much pain I started crying! I guess I'll never see him again.

Isn't there anything my doctor can do about this painfully short vagina?

Re: Four years after my hysterectomy, and still painful sex!!!

Hi (((tcherkate))) I've moved your thread over here to our Sexual Dysfunction forum, where you can get input from others who are also a long time post hysterectomy and experiencing similar difficulties.

Did you have your ovaries removed with your hysterectomy? If so, are you on HRT? It would help us in replying to you if you could take a minute to fill out your member survey and list your surgery type in your profile.

Many women experience vaginal dryness and atrophy due to low estrogen in the vaginal walls after a hysterectomy -- even sometimes if they keep their ovaries. Even many of us who are on HRT find that sometimes we need to use vaginal estrogen in addition. Has your DR ever offered this to you? Keeping enough estrogen in the vaginal walls helps them to stay moist and elastic - and a healthy vagina is stretchy enough to accomodate virtually any size man. In fact, the average pre-op vagina is only a little over 3" long and lengthens during arousal.

I hope this helps!

-Linda

Unhappy - Four years after my hysterectomy, and still painful sex!!! Re: Four years after my hysterectomy, and still painful sex!!!

Thanks for your interest. Actually, my ovaries and tubes are intact, but I have no cervix, just a cuff (now I wish he'd left it!). I made an appointment to see my current ob/gyn (not the same one who did the surgery; I've moved. I'm hoping maybe there's some faulty scar tissue that can be repaired. If not, it's going to ruin my life.

Re: Four years after my hysterectomy, and still painful sex!!!

oh, and I don't really have any dryness...that's not the issue. The problem comes with deep penetration, and it bruises my cuff terribly. I was scared it would rupture, it was so painful!

Re: Four years after my hysterectomy, and still painful sex!!!

My doctor finally gave me a vaginal suppository estrogen/testosterone
and it has been like a miracle. I had about given up on things
getting any better. Intercourse was so painful and uncomfortable...
I felt like it was tearing inside me and I could never feel normal
again.....I thought my only hope was to resort to lidocaine or
something to numb the pain because I felt terrible never
having sex with my husband.

It worked after only a few days. Everything just "fluffed" back up
is what my doctor called it. All the pain from the scar tissue has
let up since using the suppositories and ureter/bladder issue
are better(I always felt like I had an infection/irritation).
I had taken oral HRT and switched to the bio-creams but I just
didn't absorb them for some reasons I was getting worse all the time.
Still working on the libido part but I do have some
feeling back & it is easier to be aroused when you
aren't in so much pain.
I would recommend finding a doctor that will give
your vaginal hormones... my gyn gave me Estrace
and it helped but my natural hormone doctor said
I needed the testosterone too and she was right it has
worked...don't give up.

Re: Four years after my hysterectomy, and still painful sex!!!

Wow, I have not posted in a while as back to work and all, but this post fits me exactly. Since my TVH 1 year ago today, sex is pretty.....um.....awful! I think I enjoyed it once in the past year, who knows why. Probably hormones just right?? I just feel basically 'impotent' , nervous, and unaccomodating. I think some of it is mental as my bumper [cervix] is gone. I go for my 1 yr check soon and will see about the estrogen/testosterone suppos.
Samoine, Can you tell me more about that suppos. in case my doc is unfamiliar, like how it is dosed.
Thanks
