Anyone else whose doctor found "surprises" in your body at hysterectomy?

I went in for large fibroids, but then my doctor said my body gave him a couple of surprises, too. It turns out I had an ovarian cyst and endometriosis. At least I was preparing for a TAH with ovary removal, bikini cut and that's what I got. Since then I've met several other women who went in expecting one kind of hysterectomy, then had to have another due to "surprises". For example, one woman expected a bikini cut only to wake up to a vertical cut. One woman expected a TVH, but woke up having had a TAH. So did anyone here have "surprises"? I wish I'd been more pared for that possibility beforehand. I was so scared about the pathology report when I found I'd had an ovarian cyst.

I went in for a TVH with anterior and posterior repair as well. I was having the TVH because of a uterus prolapse. Low and behold, during surgery (which was supposed to be 3 hours) the surgeon discovered my uterus was full of fibroids. NO ONE knew I had them. Not my primary care doctor, not the OB/GYN and not the uro/gyn who operated. So....the surgery lasted for 5 hours instead.

My DOc and I knew that I had a lot going on in there...so I went in for the TAH with removal of ovaries and cervix and horizontal bikini cut... but what we didn't know is that I had LOTS of adhesions and that my ovaries were growing TO my uterus...

Apparently my bladder was growing on my fibroids, so they nicked the bladder and I said "hello" to a catheter for eight days post-op!

I went in for intra-mural fibroids & was surprised that I also had subserous & submucous fibroids as well. I'm so glad I got that thing outta there before the external ones really started growing!

Oh yes!!
My doctor found lots of endometriosis which had attached my bladder to my uterus (when they separated it they accidentally cut my bladder) I too had a catheter for 7 days post op. Also had a bladder tack.
He also found that I had an abdominal hernia!!! I had nooo idea!
So glad it's over and ALL was taken care of!!
Blessings to all!

We knew I had 3 big fibroids and 1 pedunculated fibroid (the kind that grows outside the uterus on a stalk). When the doctor got in there he found that I was FULL of fibroids and had 2 pedunculated fibroids. The weird thing was that they were not only attached to my uterus but they had attached to my pelvic wall. Doc said he had never seen that (he's been doing LSH since the late 80's). Makes me special I guess.

I went in for fibroids inside the uterus - found numerous fibroids inside and pedunculated outside, ovarian cysts, cysts on the fallopian tubes, chronic cervicitis, and adenomyosis. There was also something else that my niece (an RN) said meant pre-cancerous cells!! The doctor said my uterus filled my entire pelvic area and was densely adhered to my bladder. Thank goodness I had all that yucky stuff removed!

Re: Anyone else whose doctor found "surprises" in your body at hysterectomy?

I too am one of those 'surprises.' I went in with large fibroids - was supposed to be a LAVH and I would keep my ovaires. I clearly remember my pre-op appt with my Doc and her explaining that if she found anything 'suspect', or unplanned, she would do a bikini cut and also take my ovaries. At that point in the conversation, she looked up at me and said, "I really don't expect that, but I have to tell you just in a rare case."

Well, you guessed it, I was the rare case. I wound up with the TAH/BSO bikini cut. Hospital stay was twice as long and I had to take an additional two week off from work. My Doc, who specializes in gynecological problems (not OB) for the last 18 years, said "the endometriosis I found immediately upon inserting the scope in your belly button was Stage IV and one of the 10 worst cases I'd ever seen."

Surprise! I'm just so glad it's over - I can already tell my back doesn't hurt any longer, my bodily functions are better, and my acid reflux is gone completely!

One thing I never knew about was the uterine polyp that was discovered in pathology (luckily everything was benign). The nice surprise was the suspicious cyst on my ovary was discovered to be fluid-filled and was drained rather than removed. I was expecting to wake up with one ovary, DH told me right when I woke up that I got to keep both of them.
