How common are "mini-periods"?

I am facing a hysterectomy and believe keeping my cervix would be best (for bladder stability and sexual function), but worry about mini-periods.

Since my ablation my periods aren't heavy anymore, they just pretty much happen every day! I have some degree of bleeding nearly every day of the month, and I worry I would have a hysterectomy and then have spotting and bleeidng from my cervix constantly!

Re: How common are "mini-periods"?

I am having a hysterectomy due to heavy bleeding and bad cramping. My doctor told me that keeping the cervix means that it is very possible to have bleeding every month, sometimes a very tiny amount and sometimes a regular flow and yes, cramping! She sutures the ligaments to help support the vagina and bladder so that isn't an issue. I personally know several women who have had it all out and none have had any problems at all and these women had their surgeries 2-10 years ago. It's a personal decision, but do research it thoroughly. My doctor won't leave the cervix unless a patient absolutely insists because it is part of the uterus, it is not a separate organ and therefore can continue the same issues. Cauterizing the cervix lining can help, but it can heal and grow back just like it can with an ablation. Good luck to you!

Re: How common are "mini-periods"?

I read somewhere, that 10 percent get them, although I can't remember for sure. I was one of those who had them, but not anymore since my ovaries were removed. Mine were light spotting, no cramps and 2 days long -- mini pads only. They did come like clockwork, every month. There are apparently advantages to the pelvic floor to keep the cervix, although I'm no expert.

Good luck with your decision.
