TAH Oct 2008, no hormones since March 2009. Finally got bowels back to normal, then began dealing with stomach aches. I'm on Donnatol for IBS. It's working but don't think it is IBS because I've had it before and it was quite different. Anyway, now for the past 3 weeks, I've begun to have stiff, sore knuckles, and very weak shoulders and all arm muscles. Trying to exercise and do Yoga but nothing seems to help. Would a small dose of estrogen, etc. help relieve this?
Are you having any other symptoms of menopause like hot flashes or sweats? I am not sure if I would take hormones if I just had sore joints and no hot flashes. You might discuss what you are experiencing with your doctor to be sure there is nothing else going on.
Yes, I'm probably searching for an excuse to NOT call it arthritis. But, seems strange things have happened since hyst, this just added to the list. Otherwise, everything is going well and I'm thankful for that. Thanks for your reply. I've told others about this site and how comforting and imformational it is.
I did go to the doctor after my hyst for joint and pain problems and she told me (rhuemtologist), that major surgery of any kind is a shock to the body and can trigger arthritic symptoms, especially if other family members have had it. My symptoms got better over time, but I have increased my cardio and strengthening exercises, plus changed to a healthier diet. I think that going into surgical menopause is hard on the body and does not allow the body to adjust to it like natural menopause does.
I've finally begun some weight lifting and Zumba classes (which I never thought I could do, but love it!) hoping to stay strong and stay off of medication for cholesterol, etc. Am trying to limit salt and the 'white' stuff, too, such as white bread, white rice, sugar, etc. Guess I will give myself some more time before I expect to feel normal again. Thanks for your imput! Love this site!
I too suffer from stiff and aching joints and muscles since my TAH in Nov 2008. I haven't had any HRT as had ovarian cancer and don't want to take estrogen. I saw a hormone specialist last month who told me to take fish oil for the pain and stiffness which is caused by lack of estrogen. Since taking the fish oil, things have definitely approved. I also take glucosomine which helps too.
i also have muscle aches, really bad after a workout, takes days to get better. My legs are especially really sore. I was thinking it was low estrogen and plan on talking with my Dr. at my anual next month.
CathyJane - how much fish oil? I'm only taking one in the morning (don't know strength) and just tried it on my own, so was afraid to take too much. Thanks to all others for your information and suggestions, too. I'll certainly try to limit caffine and reduce beef (but we raise them!) to see if that will be sufficient. My chiro has helped, too. Love you all and wish you improving health always.
