Painful BMs after Surgery?

Hi ladies!

I had my DaVinci RALH on 8/26, and began having BMs on day 4 after the surgery.

Every time I have had terrible, stabbing pain in the area where my uterus, etc used to be.. as the poo moves through my intestine right before it comes out (er, sorry for the graphic description).

Has anyone else had this right after surgery? I am guessing/hoping it is because the intestine has moved into the area where the uterus, etc was, and that area is just still tender.

Of course I am going to ask my dr. about this when I see her this week, but I thought I'd see if anyone else here has experienced this?

Re: Painful BMs after Surgery?

I have a feeling like a softball is sitting in that area and the pains shoot down my left leg. I am taking stool softeners and Miralax. The first BM I had made me scream in agony. I thought I was going to die. I have only had one small one since and it hurt too.

Re: Painful BMs after Surgery?

We had our surgeries on the same day, and I still think my insides are going to come out each time I have a bowel movement. Especially on the lower left side, just before it starts to come out. It feels like someone's taking a knife and twisting it around. You are not alone.

Ooo, nice. Sorry to hear you ladies are having the same! I am guessing it's because of what I thought..that the area is still super tender. I will see what my doctor says on Thursday and report back.

Stay strong, ladies, and good luck with your BM's!

Re: Painful BMs after Surgery?

You are not alone. I think the gas pains & BM were the worst part of the surgery for me. You just have to keep drinking water & getting fiber & it does get better. I am 10 months out & those gas pains (I never had gas before surgery) still scares me with the pain until I realize that it is just a BM coming. You are still really early so it is not unusual for it to hurt really bad right now. It will get better!

Re: Painful BMs after Surgery?

OMG does that sound familiar. I had a BM after surgery that I will probably never forget in my entire life. I was literally in tears. :-)))

Hang in there ladies, it will get better :-)))

Very important: take care that the BMs are soft, softer than you have them normally, that makes it easier, because you cannot press as you normally would do.

Highly recommended: hot prune juice. Don't ask me why, it needs to be hot. What also helps is Milk of Magnesia. iI took it before I went to bed in the evening and the next morning was my friend.

And walk walk walk and drink a lot of water.

It needed appr. 3 weeks in my case, but after that everything went back to normal. As far as I understood my doc, besides the tenderness inside your body it can also be the case that the bowel is irritated from moving around during surgery. I just needs some time to calm down again.

Re: Painful BMs after Surgery?

I am almost 8 years post op an remember trying to have my first BM like it was yesterday......Most excruciating pain I've ever felt in my life! Worst than child pain so hopefully its comforting for you to know that their is nothing wrong with you. I HIGHLY suggest Gas-ex for at least a week maybe two as well as Colace 2x a day, one in morning one at night than cut back to 1 a day for a while til things return to normal. This did it for me. The Gas ex relieves it 50% believe it or not and take it wether you feel you have gas or not! Just TAKE it as directed. Of course for me I was going thru all this 4 -5 days post op and had a pelvic hematoma at the same time without knowing it! worst experience of my life! Hope you ladies are doing ok!

Re: Painful BMs after Surgery?

My actual BM was not bad at all. It was just all the gas leading up to it. The pre-op forgot to tell me to have just liquids so I had a normal dinner the night before surgery. I didn't find out until later that I should not have done that but my first BM was not bad like I thought it would be. Just the gas...
