Not sure how to answer this question

For some reason, this is driving me crazy. (Well, I know the reason behind all the stuff driving me crazy lately....I had a TAH and don't have my ovaries, but that's beside the point.)

I am undergoing radiation and completed my 18th session today, with 7 more to go. Plus I have two internal treatments coming up in October.

When I am explaining my diagnosis to a friend, do I say "I HAVE cancer" or "I HAD cancer"? Again, not a big deal, but it's bugging me. Do I or don't I have it? The surgeon removed the tumor, so I know it's gone and the radiation is a preventative/precaution.

Thanks for any help you can give this hot-flashing lady!

Re: Not sure how to answer this question

I asked my doc this prior to starting treatments...she said that (for me) my cancer was removed with surgery. In my mind I stopped 'having' cancer when I woke up from surgery. However when I think of time being cancer free I start counting from when treatments ended, not from the date of surgery. Because to me I was still battling the beast all through treatment.

I guess the proper explanation would be "I am currently undergoing cancer treatment"?

Re: Not sure how to answer this question

I believe (((Vega))) has suggested a good reply for your situation.
FYI, my pastor who has battled several cancers, having them remove by surgery, says in his opinion anyone whose is a cancer survivor (even after cancer is surgically removed) is in remission and hopefully long term remission.

Re: Not sure how to answer this question

I think Vega's suggestion is a good one. When I explain it to people I usually say that I was diagnosed with cancer and that I had surgery and radiation b/c of that.

Good luck with the rest of your radiation sessions!

Re: Not sure how to answer this question

That's not a silly question at all. Like you, I also had the cancer removed and am going to have chemo as a precaution and I wondered the same thing. I agree also with Vega, I think she has a good answer to the question.

Re: Not sure how to answer this question

I get uneasy when asked this question, I have been let down twice with treatment. And I feel like I jinx myself (crazy I know). I just say I am in remission and that in the oncology world they don't like to say "Cured" until you reach the 5 yr mark. And sometimes if I'm having a bad day, I just bluntly say, I feel uncomfortable talking about it. May sound harsh, but those who know me, know that is just how I am and the subject gets changed quickly.
