Started bleeding 3 weeks post op
Hi! I had a total abdominal hysterectomy 8-21 and was doing great. Two nights ago I started heavy bleeding I called my doctor and he said it was noraml sometimes 3 weeks after surgery your cervix lobes off. I have no idea what that means and was quit disturbed by it. He told me that if the bleeding didn't lighten up to come in and see him. Well it did but then last night it got a little heavier again. Is this normal?

Re: Stared bleeding 3 weeks post op
I started bleeding during my 3rd week also. It started off spotting but within a few hours it was bright red on the toilet tissue. My dr. said to REST. It took about 12 hours of total rest to become spotting and 3 days of rest to disappear.
My advice is to rest alot. Don't try to do too much. I had the same problem again in my 5th week, too. (I over estimate what I can do) Both times I had alot of cramping with the bleeding and motrin didn't kill the cramps only took the edge off them. Both times it was a few days of pain and many days of anxiety and fear to try anything new.
I like to think at this time I have finally learned the meaning of REST. Though I still thinks its just another 4 letter word!!!!

I was wondering to if you were over doing it. If you are bending or doing to much it can cause the bleeding. I would lay down also & just rest. Make sure you are not running a fever. Best wishes.

Re: Stared bleeding 3 weeks post op
Yes, I am only 13 days out (tomorrow is my 2 week mark) and I have experienced bleeding and I have found in my short time that I have overdid it and by putting my feet up and resting more (yes the 4-letter word) my bleeding is subsiding and I feel better. I do have a problem with resting and taking my time, and I have to remember that even when I feel good, it is extremely important to slow down, take time, or your body will instruct you otherwise!!! Hang in there and REST!!!

Yep you only have this one chance to heal correctly. You don't want to do anything to cause adhesions or problems down the road. It is hard to just rest but it is best right now.

Re: Started bleeding 3 weeks post op
Thank you for the replies. I don't think I have been over doing it. I hate sitting around for weeks like this but I have been behaving myself like my doctor told me. He said two weeks on my butt then just nothing extreme like cleaning the whole house, lifting my kids. He even let me go to the state fair we have here right at my two week mark.
I went in to see him today because I was getting scared he but sliver nitrate (or whatever it is) on a spot of my vaginal cuff said my stitches had dissolved and that spot was just not quit healed yet. It is still lightly bleeding though he said it should stop if not I have to go back in again.
I am just tired of this whole process I finally had the emotional break down that they warn you about today. I just want to be 100% again. I will take all your advice though and rest heck I am a pro at it now.
