Should I have one or both ovaries removed????

I have a cyst on my ovary that needs to be removed since it is quite large. I am worried that a cyst will develop on the other ovary if I leave it and then I will have to have surgery again. I do not want to go into early menapause...I am 41....but I am worried about having more surgey and of course it would be nice to not have to worry about ovarian cancer. I just had a hysterectomy in June but they left my ovaries. I had a c-section in March so this surgery I am having will be my third.

Which is worse....leaving ovary and worrying or taking both and going into early menapause. Ovarian cancer does not run in my family so I do not know what my chances are of getting it but I am just so done with surgery.

I have no idea what I should do. Help!!!! Thanks!

Hi Threejs! wave:

What does your doctor advise regarding an oophorectomy? If I were you, I would go with his/her recommendation.

Re: Should I have one or both ovaries removed????

Surgical menopause is no fun. You could have many years left before natural menopause. Are they removing a cyst or the ovary? My DD had a cyst removed, that surgery was no big deal at all, NOTHING like a hyst! She was up & caring for her baby the next day. Do as your doctor advises but even at 45 I elected to keep my ovaries as menopause doesn't hit until mid or late 50's in my family and that is a long time to be able to have my natural hormones. Good luck to you!
