Has anyone tried curves?

I went ape the other day when i found out i gained 30 lbs in 2 months so i was calling around to find the right place to help me get my weight under control. SO my question is: is curves with it they are offering a great deal for the month of october. Is it worth it? Is it something that will give me what i need and help me on the journey to a better healthier life?

Re: Has anyone tried curves?

I am not sure if you are into working out or not? I hate it, I get physically ill when I do.. so I have given up but with a knee problem my Dr told me to do water exercise and so I searched and searched and ended up at my local YMCA not only is it very cheap since I am a low income member, the water exercise is GREAT each day I do 2 hours and I never get sore or tired and its a great calorie burner! PLUS THEY have a great free trainer for you and they have everything from yoga to Pilates and weights treadmills, bikes, stair steppers, so much to choose from for older active adults too! CHECK IT OUT you will be so happy you did! GOOD LUCK

Cool - Has anyone tried curves? Re: Has anyone tried curves?

I haven't been on the site for a while - getting back into 'real life' - work, getting sick, looking after my husband, including installation of machines at home for his dialysis, and off work on stress leave and now extended leave to care for him while he dialyses at home...
Well - during the leadup to the 'end game' - when my endo and related issues had 'lumped up' my body painfully and it was hard to move, and after my TAH, I found I had become about 25 - 30kg overweight. Not a good look, and nothing could shift it. Tried meal replacements, skipping meals, was running round like a mad flea at work... nada.

Then my mum, who had a radical 'old school' hyst, started at her local Curves. She and I have a similar body type (all bum, real pears!) and the results I was seeing were amazing! She also liked the dancing (she's a bit mad, like me) and will talk to a brick wall if she's got something to say (she always does!).
So - just a smidge over a year from my TAH, I signed up and am on my 3rd week. I'm NOT looking for instant gratification, but I swear some of my shirts are already feeling like they 'fall' over my butt, instead of squeezing over it! My local Curves is run by a lovely woman who takes members (and friends) for regular nature hikes, organises fun runs and 'mixes it up' with brain games, reversing the flow on different days, etc. They also have dress up days, auctions... I'm pretty much alone in the 'real friends' stakes - a lot of my good friends have moved, or are more than 20k away, some have split up, the few I HAVE made through my husband's hospital aren't allowed to socialise (policy - stupid). I'm really hoping that eventually I'll be more of a 'veteran goer' and make friends there. The girls all seem really nice - but it's worth going, even if it's just for 'me' time, getting fit and losing the last of this 'cursed past' I have suffered for so long. I would recommend anyone trying it out - even just to walk through. Good luck everyone - blessings to you in your individual journeys.

Re: Has anyone tried curves?

I have not tried curves but it would not hurt to try. My aunt actually owns one in Upstate New York.

Since my surgery 6 wks ago I actually lost about 10 pounds.

I am considering more going to our local community center that has fitness classes.

Re: Has anyone tried curves?

I recently started the Curves 30 days for $30 trial and LOVE IT! I usually don't like to exercise but I like this! You can work as hard as you want or take it as easy as you need to on the machines. Everyone is very encouraging, helpful, and friendly, even here in a city where we all tend to keep to ourselves. If one machine is not right for you, you can skip over it (I can't do the squat machine right now while waiting for my hysterectomy, for instance). Ours is open by 6:00 a.m. and stays open until 8:00 p.m. so it's good for most schedules. If you are travelling, you can get a guest pass and go to Curves all over the country. The women, at least at the one I go to, aren't stick thin and dressed in couture work out clothes so everyone fits in.

The best thing is...they will give you a medical leaves for surgery! Then they will help you get back in the swing of things once you are released for exercise again.

I encourage you to give it a try. Ask about the 30 day trial. If you don't like it, you haven't signed anything and can just walk away. Let us know what you decide!

Re: Has anyone tried curves?

Are the women who work at Curves trained to use the machines properly? I would not want to hurt myself if I did something wrong.

Re: Has anyone tried curves?

Yes they are trained on the machines. But be careful most are not trained on how to train people post-op hyst. They will have you push yourself, just pay attention if it hurts back off. And Feel free to call ahead and ask if they have someone on staff with the hyst experience.

Re: Has anyone tried curves?

Personally I have bad knees since my surgery, so no land exercises for me... I'm not sure if my TAH/BSO speed up my problem or not but I cant walk very long or my knees swell up and I get worse pain, so I miss the exercising I use to do.. My knee muscles got really lax since I was in fear of more pain by walking.. my Dr told me water exercise, I searched high and low and then remembered the YMCA.. now I go daily for an hour and burn as many calories as if I was on land.. amazing and strengthen my knee muscle with all the weight on it.. give it a try, plus you don't sweat LOL.. I have always hated sweating tee hee.. GOOD LUCK SISTERS!
