Da Vinci Surgery

I have been diagnosed with endometriosis and both ovaries have large cysts. Its been recommended that uterus comes out with at least one ovary doing the traditional bikini line surgery. I am wondering if the da vinci method is better than the traditional one. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Well, if you did not have endometriosis, the answer might be different! In my opinion, when endometriosis is involved, the key is the skill and knowledge of the surgeon rather than the method. If at all possible, surgery with an endometriosis specialist could offer you the best outcome.

Because endometriosis is not cured with a hysterectomy, it is important that your surgeon have the ability to skillfully remove the endometriosis implants that are found. If your surgeon cannot skillfully remove the endo, then it doesn't matter by what method your surgery is done.

For instance, my surgeon was unable to remove the endometriosis on my bowel walls. It had nothing to do with the method of the surgery but everything to do with the skill of my surgeon. Thus, years after my hysterectomy, I had to travel to a specialist to have that endo removed.

If you are concerned only with the hysterectomy aspect and not the endometriosis aspect of the surgery, then it is likely the da Vinci surgery done by a skilled surgeon could be the superior method.

Re: Da Vinci Surgery

I had endo and had DaVinci surgery. I had one ovary removed due to cysts and monthly pain. It was adhered to the back of my uterus. No wonder it hurt!! I was off work for 4 weeks but really would have been better to take 6 weeks total. I felt better by 4 weeks but was still very tired and I am on my feet all day. My sister had the bikini incision and her recovery was 8 weeks and more painful than mine. I recommend the Davinci method definately.

Re: Da Vinci Surgery

Hello:

I am about to have a Robotic hysterectomy in 2 days & honestly in my opinion is the only way I would have it now that we have that option. Is much less invasive, the recovery is faster and less painful.
Abdominal insition is much painful and bigger which takes longer to heal. The scar is big & noticeable, where in Robotic surgery the inserting ports only need a very small cut of 2" -3". There are about 4 small cuts that you will have going Robotic and they heal quick and easy. You can be on a bikini in no time.
Maybe your doctor does not have access to the technology. Not all hospitals have the Da Vinci Robot so you may want to select a doctor that is able to perform it and that has done it in the past.
Wish you the best of luck in this difficult journey. Regardless of the advanced technology is still not an easy decision or process.
Many blessings.
