Nervous about surgery

I am a little nervous about my surgery scheduled for 11/13/2009. I am having a supracervical hysterectomy. Have mixed emotions about the entire surgery. Glad to have relieve from the heavy bleeding, but then again I am 46 years old with no children. Never really wanted any, but now that I know this is final, I am feeling a little sad about it.

Re: Nervous about surgery

Hello and welcome,
I am sorry that you had to come to this point in your life. Meaning that you never had kids not that you won't any but your choice is being taken away from you. If God intend to you have children he will make it possible. I am having a LSH (Laparascopic supercervical Hys) on the
27th of this month. I will be glad when it is over. I am not real nervous about it. I am a spiritual woman and I prayed about it and God told me it would be successful and gave me Psalm 27 to read. I rest in Him knowing that He knows everything about me and has given the dr.s wisdom to be able to perform these type of surgeries. With that said I pray that God will hold your hand throughout your whole process and that you will have an uneventful surgery and a health speedy recovery.

Be blessed

Re: Nervous about surgery

Hi vedean

Many women who didn't want children find themselves feeling this way. It is so final. So many things in our lives can be tentative--if we don't like a job we change jobs, if we don't like a home we move, if we struggle in a relationship we have the option to change. With this, however, there is a permanence that we aren't used to in our lives, I think.

It's okay to feel sad. It's okay to grieve. We're here to listen when you need us.

Re: Nervous about surgery

I'd had a tubal ligation several yrs ago as a preventative measure against ovarian cancer. I didn't have any real emotional problem related to that, although I've always been a little sad that I didn't have kids. Something about this surgery was different though. Maybe it's the realization that the purpose for the uterus (womb) was never realized and now it's gone. I don't know, but I know I felt it too, but the feeling has diminished as the weeks have gone by. I know I'm much healthier now and for that I'm grateful.

Re: Nervous about surgery

Mine is a week after yours. I too don't have kids or want kids (tubal at age 22) but even tho I don't want kids I have found my emotions are getting the better of me. This is taking our organs! It's the finality of it. For some women also, they don't feel they are a woman w/o their reproductive organs even if they don't want kids or are done w/ kids. It may help to talk to a counselor to get these feelings out. My other doc recommended that 'cos any surgery brings up emotions & a hyst is so final.

Re: Nervous about surgery

Hi there,
I was terrified before surgery. I had a hard time thinking and was very nervous. Once I started getting the house ready, my bedside table set up and all the food/gas-ex/miralax stocked up..I felt more committed. The day of the bowel prep I felt extra committed after drinking all of that.
The morning of surgery I felt calm and positive, as I was so ready to get it over with.
When I woke up, I had discomfort but was ELATED that it was over. I was thrilled at the fact I was able to have such a complicated surgery done laparoscopically.
Recovery has had its ups and downs but at almost 4 weeks out I am SOOO HAPPY!!!
Hang in there! My best advice would be...if your starting thinking negatively...STOP, so it does not consume you!
Best Wishes for you!!!

Re: Nervous about surgery

I myself am fine about the finality of a TVH, but was surprised when my husband became upset about it the other night. I had a tubligation at 25 because I couldn't physically manage giving birth again and thought of it as a final thing then and thought my DH did too, but apparently he always thought we would do invitro. I never knew he felt that way and now feel bad that he is sad. We adopted a baby boy in 2005 and are very much in love with him, I thought that he made our family complete.

Re: Nervous about surgery

Thanks you all that responded to me. It is so hard sitting here thinking about it. I am so glad that I found this website. I have sisters now who I can share my feelings with. I get teary eyed thinking about it. I had a myomectomy in 2003. My doctor that performed that surgery retired last year. Needless to say, I was devastated that she retired. She was the best. I prayed for GOD to send me a new doctor. I really believe that I found one. She comes highly recommended. Had to have a blood transfusion in August. Four units of blood. I want to say that some it was my fault because I was not taking my iron pills. My hemoglobin was 3.9. I thank GOD that I am still here, but knows that something has to be done. I don't want to have to get transfusions again. Tests reveal that I have a fibroid the size of a cantalope, and a couple of grapefruit sizes and a couple of oranges. Mass amount of small ones. Geesh.
