FIBROIDS - How big is big?

My fibroid(s) are the size of a 16-20 week old fetus. Is that considered very large? how large can they get??

Re: FIBROIDS - How big is big?

My uterous is the size of a small melon, about the size of a 4 month pregnancy. My biggest fibroid is 5cm and I have lots of smaller one's as well. I will be having my TAH in Jan. I was booked for A TAH on Oct 20, but when the Gyno went inside he saw that my uterous was fused to my bladder and bowels. So he closed me up and is now putting a team together to go in again in Jan. I am recovering from the insicion quite nicely. Are you planning on having a hyst ?
Best Wishes

Re: FIBROIDS - How big is big?

Hi there - Mine is 7.7cm's and I'm hoping to have it removed because of the pressure I feel and incontenence. I feel like I've got a basketball in my abdomen.

Do you have any symtoms?

Re: FIBROIDS - How big is big?

I had pressure, incontenence, severe back pain, tired and anemic because it was taking all of my vitamins, hermones and iron from me. I also felt like a basketball in me and could hardly sleep on my stomach! 4 weeks out today and I am still sore and have the swelly belly but I do feel more energenic although still not doing a whole bunch! Hope this helps!

Re: FIBROIDS - How big is big?

In 1999, I had a myomectomy for several fibroids, 3 of which measured 12 cm. I had my hysterectomy last week, and will only get the pathology report in December, but from the look of my tummy before going in, and the hardness, they were either bigger or more numerous. My doctor said that my uterus was the size of a 23 week pregnancy. No wonder they did such a long vertical incision!

I know they can get bigger than that, but reading from the other posts here, I realized I waited a LONG time to do something about it. But now, it's all gone, my tummy was flatter the day after surgery (I didn't dare touch it the day of!), and I can't wait to wear my old jeans again!

Re: FIBROIDS - How big is big?

I had a 17 cm fibroid with its own blood supply... I could not go out as I could only go 15 or 20 with out going to the bathroom, even tho it was just a piddle.. I was wearing hubby's clothes.. I couldn;t eat much cuz there was just no room in there and I am a small person.. I also had to have several iron shots and blood transfusion..

I was so glad to have surgery finally.. Life is much better..

Re: FIBROIDS - How big is big?

Mine was 20 x 25 cm. The size of a full term pregnancy. 4 weeks later, I am nearly 30 pounds lighter.

Re: FIBROIDS - How big is big?

I just recently had hysterectomy because my fibroids had grown so large they were causing lots of problems. Mine were too numerous to count, but the largest was 19 cm, and several grapfruit sized ones also. I can't get over how much thinner I look now that the huge mass is gone!

Re: FIBROIDS - How big is big?

thanks for all your information and sizes! I'm not sure how big mine are in cm's - but I have an appt today (3rd opinion) with a surgeon to ask more questions. My symptoms are pretty much like everyone else's - heavy bleeding mostly - but gas and pain during my periods, bloatness, back pain, etc. Other than my period, I really don't have pain and I've had this for so many years that I don't really remember what I normal flow or period is like anymore and really just used to all the symptoms. In the past year though, my fibroids have tripled in size and growth. Actually, the reason that brought me to having them checked recently is I had two episodes of this mysterious abdominal pain - located just below my ribcage - center and the pain lasted one time 5 hours and the second one was 10 hours! I went for tests thinking it was my gall bladder or stomach (colonoscopy and endoscopy) but all tests came back negative....which is great, but not sure if the pain has been caused by the ol' fibroids. My internist seemed to think so, but the two gynos I"ve been too have not been convincing. One gyno was uncertain about it and the second gyno's opinion is he was certain the fibroids couldn't cause that type of pain.

The two gynos recommended a hyst (one said they could do it laproscopic the other said no but by incision), but I'm petrified - still kind of young (i like to think!) 47.

Has anyone else experienced abdominal pain like I've had? not pelvic - mine was located higher than there.

For those with the larger fibroids - did anyone have them removed laproscopically??
