Heavy bleeding - anyone else had this happen?

First let me say that I am working with my doctor. But I'm terrified. Since last Saturday, I've been bleeding bad. It's slowed but has always remained bright red - leading me to beleive it's fresh. It will slow down and speed up again.

I"m calling the doc again tomorrow and she's going to do thyroid tests and stuff, but can she stop this or do I have to just wait it out. Right now, waiting it out doesn't seem to be an option because I'm convinced that it won't stop - I know that's just me but it's getting to me after a week. I can't imagine two or three weeks like this.

Thank you in advance.

Different doctors try different options to stop continuous bleeding. Some of it depends on you and some will depend on what your doctor has found works in the past with other patients.

In my case, we tried various birth control pills. When that didn't work, my GP sent me to a GYN. Based on my information (my bleeding would increase and decrease but was almost continuous for two years), he did a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy to see what was going on with my uterus and also tried a D&C to stop the bleeding. While the D&C didn't stop the bleeding, we the lap showed us the problem was endometriosis.

Your doctor may want to give you some type of progesterone or progestin to see if it will stop the bleeding. Other options could include a D&C or ablation, depending on why you are bleeding as you are.

in there!

Progesterone - how long does it take

Hi,

First thank you for responding to me.

The doc put me on Progesterone today, and I just wonder how long it takes it to start working. It's been 13 days of bleeding and I really need this to stop.

Any thoughts on how long? I know it's prolly different for everyone, but I'm just thinking.

Thank you again.

Has the progesterone helped?

I don't have an answer as to how quickly it should work. Nothing worked for me. Bleah! If the bleeding did slow down or stop, it started up again shortly!

Stay in touch with your doctor on this!

It's slowed down after 4 days. It hasn't stopped yet. But I have a 14 day supply so I think maybe it takes awhile longer. I'm crossing everything.

Re: Heavy bleeding - anyone else had this happen?

Progesterone for me makes my bleeding much worse. Once I quit my 14 day supply, the bleeding came back just as hard and fast. After two months of 14 days on and 14 days off, I stopped taking the progesterone (Prometrium). I just can't handle it, plus I was getting seriously anemic from blood loss.

I hope it works for you and prevents/postpones the day you may have to try something else!

Were you diagnosed with cancer? I had been bleeding heavy during my periods for years, and the past year it got really bad, and I became anemic and my doctor sent me for more testing, (ultrasound, thyroid). My ultrasound showed my uterus lining was thicken, but it wasn't severe. She then sent me to my GYN and in her office she performed an endometrial biopsy, it came back the very next day positive for cancer. I am sure they are trying to figure it all out, but don't get yourself in a frezy. Do push for more testing though, my doctors were great, but sometimes we have to tell them what we want done. Hope you find out what your problem is soon, but be assured that you will be okay. I had my hysterectomy October 15th, and I am happy to say that I am now cancer free. I feel blessed that they caught my cancer so early, because I had not told my doctor about my period problems until after she found that I was anemic. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Blessings to you.

Re: Heavy bleeding - anyone else had this happen?

I was sent to the GYN to get my bleeding under control (D&C & ablation), but when the found I had cancer everything changed. I did end up having a D&C to confirm the diagnoses, and then had to make the decision to have surgery. I am glad its over, and I am doing great!!! Hope things work out for you soon.
