Age 56 post-menopausal - should I keep ovaries?

I need a hysterectomy to remove fibroid tumors. My Dr. recommends removing my ovaries as well. I have not had a period in over 4 years, and do not take HRT.

What do you suggest. I've heard keeping ovaries is good for the long-term in terms of hormone production, less risk for heart disease and bone loss.

The risk of course is ovarian cancer. I have taken many years of fertility drugs (without success) and this is a concern.

I need your advice ladies!

Re: Age 56 post-menopausal - should I keep ovaries?

Maybe you want to see another doctor for a second opinion? I did see 4 doctors before finding a doctor that I was comfortable with to do the operation. I am also post-menopausal. I also have fibroids. I did not keep my ovaries but that was because I had a LARGE cyst on my left ovary. Also, because of other health issues (asthma, multiple pulmonary emboli last year, lung nodules, and migraines) was having difficulty to even be approved for surgery. I wanted to get it all out while I could.

Re: Age 56 post-menopausal - should I keep ovaries?

Why not ask your dr prior to surgery to test hormone levels to see if your ovaries are producing any hormones? If they are and they're healthy, I'd leave them. The current recommendation is to leave them if they're healthy. They say however that 1 in 3 will experience ovarian failure within 2-3 years post hysterectomy. That was the case with me.
