Pain relief before surgery

How did you manage pain pills BEFORE surgery? I'm scheduled for surgery and per dr said he wanted me to have it done the first couple weeks of my cycle. Since I am exactly four weeks and two days away from surgery and I just got my Aunt Flo today this month, I'm concerned that I may not be able to take vicodin without food. That would put me at Sat or Sunday for excruciating pain and heavy bleeding the day before surgery. They told me I could keep taking Vicodin and benadryl but I failed to ask what type of diet I will be on. I can only go 4 hours max between pills. I am concerned about taking Vicodin on an empty stomach or with a clear liquids only and getting sick. Can anyone give me advice if they have been through this before. Also I know I can't have anything after midnight so I may be walking into the castle in severe pain. Thanks for any advice. I will ask dr about this but wanted to ask her first for ideas. Oh can anyone tell me what a clear liquid that would be filling enough to take with vicodin? I usually only need a half piece of bread or a couple of crackers with the pill and I don't get sick.

Pain relief before surgery

This is really something to call your doctor about. Explain all the concerns you've explained here. Your doctor may be able to give you oral antinausea medication to take with the Vicodin after you're off food. You may also be allowed to take meds in the morning with the tiniest swallow of water. Different doctors vary in their procedures.

Please call--you'll feel so much better! This is something your doctor may not have thought about.

The good news ('cause you need some, right now, right?) is that the postop pain may not seem so bad to you in comparison.

Any others with pain meds before surgery?

bump!!!

I do think the post op pain will be less at least I hope so. To Oddie, oh my why so unfortunate your dr didn't give you anything. I asked for something for pain since the regular over the counter stuff and twice the dose wasn't working and they had no problem giving it to me.
