when is too early to work again?

I run a receiving dock which consist of unloading trucks, opening huge metal doors by chain pullies when the trucks arive and then checking in the skids of freight. Im due to return on the 30th of Nov and my surgery was the 12th. Is this too soon or am I being a big baby?? Any one out there do a similar job?

Re: when is too early to work again?

Have you talked with your DR about when you should return to this job? IMHO two weeks post op is way too soon to return to work even at a physically "easy" job, much less one in which you are pulling chains to open heavy doors. You are NOT being a big baby at all... most DRs would have you give it a minimum of six weeks before considering a return to work, possibly longer given the physical nature of the job.

Thats what I thought too. Im due to go back the 30th but my Dr appt for my check up is the day after that. Im going to request to be off the rest of next week as well. Thanks for the advice I dont feel like a big baby now!

Re: when is too early to work again?

I think a lot of it depends on the type of work you do. I had a TVH-BSO on 11-19-09, and I'm going back on 11-30-09. But, I'm a medical assistant/scribe, so all I have to do is follow the doctor around and type for him, although I stand all day. I feel perfectly normal now, so I think waiting one more week until 11-30 is plenty for me. Plus, I know my boss will let me take a break whenever I need to, since he understands the situation.

As far as pulling heavy doors, I think I would ask my gyn first if I were you.

Re: when is too early to work again?

I completely agree with surferbabe (Linda). If you look at the checkpoints provided by this site, you can see why going back to that type of job just wouldn't make sense: http://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/view_chk.htm
