How long will I be this sore?

I had surgery Monday. I was told by everyone what a breeze this surgery was...wow someone really lied to me. This is the most painful thing Ive ever done. Im having to take medication around the clock. How long will I feel like this?

Re: How long will I be this sore?

I had surgery Monday as well and I am still very sore & taking the medication. Also have nausea that comes and goes. Do you have that too? I feel like I can't stand up straight - walking like an old woman. I had an LAVH - what did you have? I still feel lots of gas bubbles in there moving around too. Really scared about having the first bm.

Re: How long will I be this sore?

I'm sorry you're feeling so badly. Don't worry--you aren't a wimp! I had several people (including my dr) tell me what a piece of cake this surgery was...UH .... NO.
I've always head a high pain threshold but this surgery threw me for a loop!
Rest up, definitely don't push yourself. And you'll start to feel human again before you know it! Really, after a week or so the very serious pain goes. Every day is better than the last. Hang in there!

Re: How long will I be this sore?

My surgery was Dec. 15....and the level of pain totally took me by surprise. I had TVH - took uterus and cervix - and a bladder sling as well. I had a kidney removed in 2005 and I just expected the pain to be along those lines. I didn't really have any trouble with that surgery.
So...when I woke up in the recovery room and then later in my hospital room - I was SHOCKED by the level of pain. Oh my gosh - I was BEGGING for pain killers!

Now I'm just over a week from the surgery -and it's so much better already! I'm using just Tylenol for the pain during the day - using the narcotics to sleep at night but I hope to be done with that soon, too.

The first bm was scary - but it ended up being just fine. Just drink plenty of water, walk every day (even just around your house - shuffling is fine), and up your fiber.

Hang in there. This is NOT an easy surgery - it's major. Take the time to sleep and rest. don't push yourself and don't be too hard on yourself.

Re: How long will I be this sore?

So sorry you are having a difficult time. Of course this is a painful surgery. Makes ya think who ever told you that had some pretty good pain meds. LOL. But I know everyone is different, don't beat yourself up beacause you are in pain. You just had surgery a few days ago. It does get better, I promise you. I'm back to normal physical activity and I had a total pelvic exenteration. It takes time.

Re: How long will I be this sore?

It was about 4 weeks before I really stopped having significant pain. Each week it does get better but the major soreness was at least a month. Be patient with it and with yourself and keep taking your walks, medicine, getting rest and drinking lots of water.

It's easy for any of us to look back and say, "It wasn't that bad" but none of us would have said it at the time!

I keep asking my husband how much pain I was in (yes, I have forgotten) and he reminds me it was pretty intense at times.

Hang in there!

Re: How long will I be this sore?

I had my surgery(DVH with BSO) on Sept.9th. and boy was I begging for pain medicines. I can't take most narcotics so had to use Ibuprofen and that may have caused me to have the pain longer. It took me a good month and a half before I didn't need the medicine. Then I had a setback and needed the medicines again. It definitely does get better but it takes some time. The one thing I learned was to take the medicine on time especially at first as my body would then be in so much pain that the medicine was trying to catch up. Don't feel like you are a wimp, you had major surgery and you may need the pain meds for awhile. Everyone is different and I know that it seems like I was someone who needed it for a long time but my doctors just told me that if I was in pain, take the medicine. Quit trying to be superwoman. Good advice. Hope you feel better

Re: How long will I be this sore?

Maybe my doctor isnt so great ... Idont know these abbreviations. He just called it a vaginal hysterectomy. He left my ovaries because Im only 32. I dont know the other terms you guys are using. My husband acts like Im gonna get addicted to these pain meds because I keep asking for them..glad to see im not the only one. Really frustrated with all the pain at holiday time. Merry Christmas to me...TYLOX! lol

Re: How long will I be this sore?

welcome sista...we are all in the same healing boat. A week before my surgery I asked a room full of women if they had experienced a Hysterectomy ...11 happy hands came up all glad they had done it....3 stayed afterwards to tell me the truth about the extreme pain that I would endure. Another friend called to warn me to ask for all the pain killers I could get and to take as long as I need to to heal and to make sure to rest ,rest, rest....and that's pretty much how it's been for me...2 weeks ago today I was really happy and singing on the moriphine....got home and slept 3 days getting up to drink and a eat a little food and keeping up with pain killer...just had post op and Doc says I'm healing just right....but it's so tempting to overdue it and start hurting again Just feels like a slow motion picture and it gets old to lay around and then you cry one day ...just let it out..
