For those of you who had adenomyosis... How large did your uterus get?

I just got my results back from pathology, and my uterus weighed EIGHT pounds from the adenomyosis! A normal uterus weighs 2-3 ounces! HUGE! The doctor had said my uterus was the size of a 20 week pregnancy before the surgery... but the weight thing is blowing my mind.

Good lord! I thought they weighed about a pound or so but EIGHT?!?!

I didn't ask my doctor how much mine weighed, I'll ask her if I had swelling from mine. I did have adenomyosis but not sure how badly.

Re: For those of you who had adenomyosis... How large did your uterus get?

I will have my post-op appt next week. I am two weeks today post op. I too am so curious how large mine was. I had adenomyosis with an Adenomatoid tumor in the uterus. Kept the ovaries and cervix. Had an abdominal incision which is very painful. I still cannot walk correctly nor do any activity at all. Will update you on weight

oneifbyair - it will get better, I promise. Try and stand as straight as possible, it really does help with the pain if you can stand up.

My adenomyosis was so bad I lost half my blood volume - but my uterus was "normal" sized. It is the infiltration of abnormal tissue between the muscular tissue that is the problem, not so much the size of the organ.

I imagine 8lbs should be more than a 20 week pregnancy, a full term baby weighs that much! My uterus was the size of a 12 week pregnancy.

Re: For those of you who had adenomyosis... How large did your uterus get?

Keep in mind that having Adenomyosis does NOT mean that your uterus is larger. Like Sharpie said, it has to do with tissue within the muscular wall of the uterus. My uterus was spongy not necessarily larger.

Re: For those of you who had adenomyosis... How large did your uterus get?

Thanks for the feedback everyone... I am still just marveling that my uterus was so heavy and big. I've done a little research online today to see just how big a uterus alone can get... 20 weeks and eight pounds is certainly up there. What I really want to know is how an eight pound uterus was missed by my regular obgyn... with all the tests that I've undergone over the last two years. All she ever told me I had was fibroids. I have a feeling my surgeon weighed my uterus because it was so enlarged... I have no idea if it is normal to have the uterus weighed in pathology. I will ask when I see him in January.

Re: For those of you who had adenomyosis... How large did your uterus get?

dutchie, it would be interesting to see if you could get the report. It is freaky, isn't it? 8 pounds! I was amazed that my surgeon was able to do the surgery as a LSH. We knew my uterus was enlarged, and we knew I had fibroids... but we had no idea I had adenomyosis. That was a surprise. Luckily my surgeon was do the removal with laparoscopy in spite of my large uterus.
