Scheduled for bilateral dermoid cyst removal

I am wondering if anyone else has had recurrent dermoid cysts. This will be my second surgery. The first time I had a traditional lap this time I am scheduled for da vinci lap, with a posterior colpotomy so the cysts will be removed vaginally . I am not excited about that! I really want to preserve my fertility if possible . The doctor suggested hysterectomy since they have recurred but I am not ready for that yet.

I am also wondering if anyone can compare a regular lap recovery with a da vinci recovery?

Re: Scheduled for bilateral dermoid cyst removal

I lost my left ovary to a very large dermoid in April 2007. In May 2009 I had a dermoid on my right (only remaining) ovary. In October 2009 (just months later) we found another dermoid on the ovary. I chose to have my last ovary removed because I couldn't keep going through these surgeries. It was a good idea - they found THREE dermoids!!

My last surgery was January 27, 2010. Just two weeks ago. I'm doing okay, I guess. These last two surgeries were regular laparoscopic. My doctor has put me on Seasonique (birth control pill) for my HRT. We'll see how that goes. I'm waiting to see how this surgical menopause goes for me.

We kept my uterus so that someday we have the option of using an egg donor. Good luck to you!!

Thanks! I had my surgery January 8th four weeks ago. I am still recovering now! I think the surgery this time was much more involved because I had a lot of adhesions. I hope your recovery goes well! Take care!

Re: Scheduled for bilateral dermoid cyst removal

I had a laparoscopy(June) and laparotomy(July) in 2004 to remove bilateral dermoids. There were three in all. In January (2010) they found the same thing again. This time I'll be having my ovaries removed as the pains during the wait and see as well as the time between drs is enough for me. This will be the 5th surgery (all types) in my life and I'm only 25. Mind you there are other factors but I'll pass on waiting to see if they come back again.

Re: Scheduled for bilateral dermoid cyst removal

If my family was complete then I would have probably gone for that . Actually since I have adenomyosis The doc wanted to do a total hysterectomy . But he agreed to more conservative treatment for me. We really wanted the oppurtunity to have more children.

If we wanted to have more children I would go with the same choices you are making. Good luck with everything

Re: Scheduled for bilateral dermoid cyst removal

Thanks! it actually took the full 6 weeks post-op before i was feeling myself again. I could not really drive at all for the first four weeks. So take care and be very easy on yourself during recovery!
