Bleeding from TAH incision - 4.5 weeks post op

I am 4.5 weeks after a TAH - uncomplicated procedure. A section of my incision appears to be refusing to heal - it was bleeding in hospital and has been weepy ever since. Last night it was bleeding again- bright red. Prior to this I have been experiencing increased pain and a cramping, contraction type sensation whenever I move - feels as if I have a heavy alien in there. Today the whole incision area is painful and above the weepy part it is very tender. My swelly belly is so bad I had people staring at it yesterday when out at the shops and my cat thought it was a comfortable place to sleep on top of! She was not impressed when I would not let her knead my tummy nor curl up on it. I am assuming rest will help but wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and how you handled it.

Re: Bleeding from TAH incision - 4.5 weeks post op

Hi we share the same date and surgery! My incision was weepy one week out and my ob gyn pressed on it at the one week post op. It opened on him in the office. The following Monday the rest on the incision opened on me at home. I had to pack it at least twice a day until it heals. It still isn't completely healed. Have you let your doc know that it is painful and weepy? I know my doc said that fluid sometimes gets trapped between the layers as they close us up. I would call my doc when they open and let them know what is going on. Better safe than sorry. Hope you get better soon.

Re: Bleeding from TAH incision - 4.5 weeks post op

I had the same surgery, but on Dec 3rd. My incision also got infected. The nurse said that what would help the most in taking one to two showers daily where you just let the water his the area and that will help to get rid of the fluid that is trapped. It has helped alot the incision is healing much better and looks alot better. i just stand in the shower and let the water hit my belly for 15 to 20 minutes.

In hospital the nurse told me just to let the water run over the incision but my belly gets in the way! My GP told me to use a jug of water or a hand held spray. I have been using the spray on the incision but will try your tip. Unfortunately we have water restrictions here due to past drought so I can't stand in the shower too long!

my belly gets in the way as well. I just hold it up to allow the water to hit the area. Hopefully the jug of water will work just as well. I think the key is to do it a couple times daily or as much as possible.

Re: Bleeding from TAH incision - 4.5 weeks post op

Went to my GP this morning and she found an undissolved stitch at the site where I was bleeding. She also took a swab and sent it to pathology as she said the site smelt a bit off. Also started me on antibiotics and sent me for blood and urine tests as I was also running a low grade fever. Blood tests were not fun - my veins refused to show up nor yield any blood! I came home and had a sleep - yet another day when my backlog of assignments doesn't get done.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully all will turn out ok and the antibiotics should take care of any infection. let me know how it goes. My prayers are with you.
