worried about internal stitches
Ok,
I shouldn't have, but I'm kind of glad I did. I read "after" stories. Guess I'm clueless here, but the thought of internal stitches never crossed my mind. (duh) I've been so concerned with the decision-making of what they would do instead of the specifics of the surgery.
I'm scheduled for a LAVH/BSO (is that a total?) Still learning the terms. I'm pretty sure my doc uses the da Vinci.
Haven't had pre-op visit yet.
My concern is my body chemistry doesn't dissolve the dissolvable stitches. They just work their way out of whatever incision they've been put it. (can't convince the docs NOT to use them) Everywhere they have been - even little incisions from lap gallbladder surgery are gaping now where they try to come out, but they were superficial.
Anyone else not dissolve stitches - did they do something different for you? What happens when they don't dissolve -do they just heal and stay imbedded within the incision forever like a gallbladder clip or something? (sorry if too graphic)
What should I expect? I feel so stupid.
Help!

Re: worried about internal stitches
There are other techniques that *can* be used if your surgeon is familiar with them and feels comfortable with using them for you. One example is internal titanium staples -- I have a lot of them where my colon was anastomosed during a resection. I don't feel them, although I did initially every time I ate as the food passed through those areas. The only other downside is that they show up in some types of imaging tests, so for example I have to mention them to the tech when I have a DEXA scan of my hip.
Another method that is commonly used is called Ligasure. It cuts and cauterizes the tissues, vessels etc all in one step. I'm not sure if it's used during da Vinci procedures but you could ask your doctor.
I hope this helps. Good luck with your surgery!

Re: worried about internal stitches
Linda,
thank you so much for the reply. I feel better at least knowing there might be an alternative. I've known about the LAVH for a couple of weeks now, but until last night - didn't think about internal stitches - and after I read how many some people have - I freaked!
I calmed down today - kept telling myself that I'm not the only person the world who doesn't dissolve those stitches - I know people, but not who had hysterectomies - lol.
I will ask my doc about Ligasure at my pre-op.
Thanks again! Can ya tell
