Any tips on keeping track of all these bills?

Having a hard time keeping track of all the bills and statements from various doctors, facilities, and the insurance company. I also had back issues last year so receiving bills from them. We had different insurance last year (2009), and have a flexible spending account for medical. We have good insurance (thank goodness!), but with different information flying in, and all the medical lingo I'm not familiar with, I'm having a hard time with it all. I have a fear of paying for something twice! I had created folders for the different companies (one for each doc, one for insurance co, etc), but I'm having difficulty keeping everything straight (what EOB covers what bill, etc). On top of that, I'm dealing with docs billing our "old" insurance carrier (from 2008) so things need to be re-billed.

Any tips? We're pretty new to such an extensive amount being billed. Typically is just our annual trip to the doc and only dealt with co-pays and deductibles.

Thank you!

Re: Any tips on keeping track of all these bills?

Hi

My EOBs were very specific about what they were covering. I found the matching itemized bill, and

1) made a copy of the EOB and attached it to the bill.
2) highlighted the item on the bill that was shown paid on the EOB
3) noted the date of the EOB on the bill beside that item.

You are wise to check like this. as I have caught double charges, overcharges and mistakes made by both medical offices and insurance companies, though not frequently. It helps to have both the bill and the EOB info when you call to ask for a correction or explanation.

I also kept a running tab of our "out of pocket" expenses on a ledger noting date paid, amount paid, and to whom, along with copies of those receipts.

Someone else may come along with an easier way to do it, but this works well for me.

Best wishes for a good recovery.

Kay
