Anybody NOT have libido/sexual problems after hysterectomy?

I had my LAVH almost 6 weeks ago and am approaching the big day when I can have "relations" again. My husband and I have always had a good sex life and I am very worried about issues that might crop up now. I have only seen posts from people who have pain and problems with sex after their hysterectomies, and I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who is not taking hormones (I can't) who has NOT had any issues with these things and is enjoying a fulfilling sex life despite menopause with no HRT's. I need good vibes!

Re: Anybody NOT have libido/sexual problems after hysterectomy?

Hi. I was put on premarin right after surgery, but I didn't like taking it, so have been off of it for about 10 months now.

Since then, some symptoms increased (hot flashes/night sweats) but others have improved (my hair is the thickest it's ever been in my life).

The one thing that has remained the same, on and off Premarin is libido. For the most part I do not struggle with vaginal dryness either, so it's the same as it was pre-hyst. Every once in a while need lubricant, but for most part, same.

That said, my sex drive has been lower since the surgery--sometimes to the point that if it weren't for my husband, I might even think of it. So, yes, sometimes I might not be in the mood, but once engaged in foreplay that changes. As mentioned above though, I felt the same when I was on Premarin.

What I would suggest is that if you find yourself not being in the mood to not let those feelings run whether or not you enjoy making love to your husband. I know beforehand, that was a good indicator and worked for us since it balanced out. However, since the surgery, it doesn't often balance pre-foreplay. It took us a while to figure that out. Now that we have, we try to maintain innocent foreplay (flirting, light touches) throughout the day and I agree that I will not base decision to make love on how I feel (don't feel, should say). And it's been worth it. In fact, I would say because of it, we are more romantic than we were before surgery (when we got so busy with life we just took it for granted, the schedules and the kids, etc.)

Bear in mind, this might be unusual case, and I don't have pain associated with some issues of hysterectomy surgery.

Hi, DesertSister:

I am only 6 wks post-op, but my libido is back. (I don't use HRT.) Orgasm "works" (yay!) although it does feel different than before. However, I haven't had penetrative sex yet, as I haven't been given the OK by the doctor.

I had menopause for a year and a half before my surgery, without HRT. Our sex life was always good up through menopause. I too have apprehensions about resuming sex after surgery, for fear of pain. I am going to bring this up with the doctor at my next visit, because a good sex life is important to me as well.

I had mine in November. I'm doing just fine. My husband and I haven't noticed ANY changes in my mood, libido, or orgasm. I've had an orgasm every time I've tried so far!

Re: Anybody NOT have libido/sexual problems after hysterectomy?

Thank you all so much for sharing your positive experiences! I think I was starting to borrow trouble by reading all of the posts about problems with this. It's good to hear from people who are doing just fine in this area. I need to just relax, wait, and see how things turn out when I get the go-ahead!

Same here....surgery two weeks ago. Not on HRT. No mood swings, hot flashes or crying spells. Libido is overactive right now and I can't wait to be released for sex

Re: Anybody NOT have libido/sexual problems after hysterectomy?

I wished I had the luck you ladies have had with your hysterectomy, (total hyser for me, coned cervix is all that is left)mine was a night mare, it has been since 2003, emotional roller coaster. I have NO libido what so ever, have very painful intercourse, so I don't even bother, have no desire for any, I know that is not fair to my husband at all, I have tried, but it so painful, I can't wait for it to over with, afraid to say anything..
I am not on any hormones, I was on bioidenticals, however that didn't work.. I seem to be in a better mood when I am not on any HRT....life is much better that way for me, my family, friends..

Re: Anybody NOT have libido/sexual problems after hysterectomy?

I am 2 weeks post-op tomorrow. I, too, am worried about my libido and sex-drive now that I've had my uterus, cervix, and ovaries removed. Honestly, I've felt a heightened sense of sexuality since my hyst. I hope it doesn't go away! I've realized since joining HysterSisters that there are many, many different experiences here. Lots of info on just about everything. I was so glad to read there are others who have the same concerns I do. I've decided to see where my recovery takes me, and if an issue arises, I'll read about it here, get the answers I need, and deal with it.

There is nothing I can't handle with acceptance, an open mind, and the willingness to try something different if what I'm doing isn't working for me. My toolbox is full, I just need to know which tool is going to work best for me.

The women here at HysterSisters are helpful, understanding, wise, knowledgeable, and just plain fabulous. Thanks!
