Help! Is it adeno?

I am 37 with two normal vaginally delivered children. I have been off bc pills for more than a year and since then have had post coital bleeding - every time. I am now experiencing pain during intercourse and everytime I have a bowel movement, I bleed (vaginally). Also, my periods are running on 5 or more week cycles. My hysterosonogram was normal, as was all of the other tests - endometrial biopsy, pap smear... the doctor thinks I have adenomyosis and recommends cryoablation or a hysterectomy. It just seems to be getting worse. I don't have terrible cramps, just mild constant small twinges. The bleeding isn't excessive - some clotting, but not horrible. It just feels like I am always bleeding in some manner. Does this sound familiar to anyone???

Re: Help! Is it adeno?

Hi,

I just had abdominal hysterectomy and it was confirmed there was a lot of adenomyosis present. This can be suspected, but not confirmed, until the uterus is actually removed and pathology is done on it.

Before surgery, I had been on bc pills since I was 18 (I am now 44). About a year ago, I started having some break-through bleeding and menopausal symptoms, so I stopped taking it and had a horrendous period. I started taking it again, and the symptoms continued. I went to ob/gyn for the first time (my family doc had always done my paps), and she told me she strongly recommended that I stop taking the pill immediately b/c I am also diabetic and the pills increases risk of heart attack/stroke, and also estrogen interferes with glucose tolerance. All my years as a diabetic, and no doctor had ever told me that! Anyway, I stopped the pill in October 09, and had a period November that was rough, and December that was intolerable (went to ER b/c I lost so much blood and had HUGE clots also, and terrible cramping that felt like labor). They did testing (ultrasound, endometrial biopsy, etc), and did not find anything. My gyne told me to restart the pill and also gave me medication to stop the bleeding and put me on bed rest. Her next recommendation 3 days later was to do a Mirena IUD, which would help with all the symptoms I was having. She did not recommend ablation surgery b/c my uterus was too large (another symptom of adeno). When she went to install the IUD, she couldn't get it in! She tried 4 times, and my uterus was too deep, and lining too thick to penetrate and get it in place. She had never had that problem in over 20 years. So...last option was hysterectomy, which I immediately scheduled. I just had it done last Thursday, (abdominally due to uterus size), and am looking forward to having all these problems behind me.

Has your doc said anything about the size of your uterus? Mine was 17 centimeters, and normal is 5-7 cm. That could be a big indicator of adeno.

I've written so much, I forgot your original question!

I would recommend a second opinion, and from other sisters on the website, ablation surgery was not effective for adeno, and they ended up with hysterectomy anyway.

If you have any more questions or concerns, you can let me know.

Sorry this is so long! I guess it feels good to tell "my story".

Good luck to you,
Mary
