Anyone else not having menopausal symptoms yet?

My doc gave me a prescription for Premarin when I left the hospital. I had it filled but have not started taking it yet. I had my TAH (took uterus, overaries and cervic) on 1/19/10 and I have not yet had any symptoms of menopause except for my hair falling out...lol....anyone else not having symptoms yet? I'm praying things will continue as is because I feel fantastic mentally and emotionally. Physically I am doing great as well. Some internal pains but nothing out of the ordinary.

Re: Anyone else not having menopausal symptoms yet?

Hi

I'm glad that your recovery is going well.

There is very occassionally, a woman who will have her ovaries removed and not use HRT, and not experience any negative symptoms (that they know of). That is great, but before you decide you are in that group, you might want to be aware that our bodies store estrogen in body fat and other tissues. It can take anywhere from hours to days to months for those stores to be used up.

So, you might not want to throw that prescription away yet. Give it some time, and see if you need it.

Also, there are other things to consider, that you may be unaware of. Estrogen protects against osteoporosis, and aids in heart health. It can help keep blood pressure low, and the blood lipids down.

I hope you continue to have a really good recovery. Remember, healthy ovaries will continue to provide a woman with estrogen for the rest of her life, just in smaller amounts. So, don't be upset if you find that you need just a little to help you be your healthiest.

I had some night sweats and hot flashes right after surgery, but haven't had anything recently. I do use 0.5 Premarin cream once a week just to help the tissue stay healthy.

Re: Anyone else not having menopausal symptoms yet?

When you say you use the Premarin cream to help the tissues stay health, what tissues are you referring to.

I thought I was doing a good thing by not taking the HRT since I'm not having symptoms but am I doing a bad thing for myself? I immediately started taking Calcium with D, Vitamin B Complex, and a Multi-Vitamin so I was thinking that I was being good to myself for a change but it sounds like I'm being to optimistic and may be hurting myself by not taking the hormone. But if so, why are so many doctors weening ladies off of HRT? I work at a hospital with many woman and all of them have told me their doctors have weened them off of the hormone. Poo, I don't know what to do.

Re: Anyone else not having menopausal symptoms yet?

There is a big difference in natural menopause when the ovaries still provide estrogen, and surgical memopause when there are no longer any ovaries to provide estrogen.

Many women in natural menopause will use HRT temporarily to get them through the symptoms of the fluctuating hormones, then will be able to comfortably wean off the HRT. But, they are still getting estrogen from their ovaries.

I use a dose of estrogen that keeps me at a normal post-menopausal level. I'm 54, and so that is right for me.

The Premarin cream is to help the vagina. The Dr. said that it helps the tissue heal and stay healthy and as I had LAVH and a cervical cuff it is supposed to help everything down there. I use a very small amount and then only once a week.

Re: Anyone else not having menopausal symptoms yet?

Hi There - I am 10 weeks post op tomorrow and haven't had any signs as of yet. Hoping that's a good thing and they won't show up at all. Take care!

Re: Anyone else not having menopausal symptoms yet?

WOW... that is great. I started having wicked hot flashes and night sweats about a week post op. I started with this spray thing (forget the name) but after a week I was still very uncomfortable with the night sweats and hot flashes. Now I am on .05 vivel dot and feel great. Flashing and sweats are gone. The body is really interesting.... my mom had a hyster when she was 21 (emergency after my birth) and has been on all shapes of HRT. Now she is on an over the counter dot she buys in Israel, made in Switzerland, that is a .02.... the US doesn't make one that goes that low. She would love to get off them at 65 but she feels so much better with that small dose

Re: Anyone else not having menopausal symptoms yet?

I am only 4 weeks post op.(TVH 1/19) and I have not had many symptoms yet either. A few "warm flashes" not at all unmanagable. I take a multi vitamin and drink 2 cups of soymilk each day. Keep a good attitude and take care of yourself and see what happens. We might need HRT in the future but for now lets enjoy not needing it!! Have a wonderful day!
