I Think it's adeno....

OK....so here's the story. For the past 3 years I've been having some irregularities with my period. I would go 2 to 3 months without having one and then....BAM!!....it hits with a vengeance, even though they were still 7 days long. I kept thinking that I might be perimenopausal even though I was 35 when this all began ( I used to have pretty regular cycles, ranging anywhere from 30 to 36 days). Then in Sept. of '09 I didn't have a period but when October rolled around I had a long, heavy period with clots that lasted for 20 days. I was sooo frustrated. Two weeks after that I had another 22 day long and heavy period with large clots and flooding. I went to the doctor who sent me for a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound and found I had a thickened endometrium with an irregularity. When I went back to my GYNO, he said it was a polyp and recommended an hysteroscopy, a D & C, and an ablation which would help with the prolonged bleeding. He did say that if I have adenomyosis, which we won't know until after the ablation, then the ablation would not help with that. In that case, he said I would need a hysterectomy

So...present day now. It's been 6 1/2 weeks since my ablation, hysteroscopy, and D & C, and guess what? I'm having a full on period, heavy with clots and flooding and it's day 8 with no end in sight. I do need to mention that I do have low back pain that seems to radiate to my thighs and I have sciatica. This happens every time I am on my period, not just now.

Has anyone else experienced this. I mean it seems way too soon after an ablation to be having a period like this, which makes me think it's got to be adeno. Any suggestions and/or advice would be helpful. I do plan on talking to my GYNO......just wanted other opinions and to see if others have had the same type of experience with this

Thanks so much,

Krys

Re: I Think it's adeno....

I was told in 2007 that I might have adenomyosis as well. It seemed like I would have one normal period then one horibble one, alternating every other month. I didnt so much bleed profusely, but I had horrible stabbing pains on the right side of my abdomen. Im a deputy sheriff and it became so bad that i was unable to wear my duty belt and would be literallly excused from work for 5 days at a time. My doc did a sonogram and stated my uterus was abnormaly large. My ovaries were okay. I have also had a hard time carrying pregnancies...I have miscarried 3 times. Last time in 2009. The doc said other than taking pain medication, a hysterectomy would solve the problems I am having...
I have also noticed that I look like im four months pregnant all of the time...and worse during pms, which by the way has gotten progressively worse...I have horrible migraines, cramps, gas, bloating, mood swings, fatigue etc...I have read other posts about constant indigestion and frequent urination being some of the symptoms and I also suffer from those conditions...I never reallly attributed it to having an enlarged uterus taking up some space in there...who knows...
Im 37 years old and also suffer from thyroid disease as well...Terrific right?
All I can say is I can not wait until june when I get my annual vacation so I can schedule my hysterectomy. Im just worried about how my body will react afterwards...but I dont think it can be half as bad as it is right now
Good Luck and I hope you find a solution for yourself.....

Re: I Think it's adeno....

Hi, I had the wacko bleeding & heavy clotting & steady periods. when I hit 40. The ablation (novasure) stopped all my bleeding, however it addressed a symptom, I was also having pelvic pain & It seemed to be extreme when I was passing a clot.

I just had a hysterectomy 3 weeks ago, The doctor #14 believed it was adenomyosis because he seen a thickening in the wall of the uterus & he said shouldn't have been that thick after having the ablation. He seen it on an ultrasound, he confirmed it on an MRI, however, since the hysterectomy, I got pathology report & this bump was a tumor/cyst in the wall was not adenomyosis. So it could have been address by removing part of the wall with the cyst, but I already had a tubal so I couldn't have children anyway & I opted for the hysterectomy.

It's still early it's 3 weeks, but my pain hasn't left yet. so if the issue is the bleeding, I would think it would work but I'm still spotting from surgery ( but I didn't listen & I lifted heavy). If your issue is pain, I didn't get a guarentee.

I hope this info is helpful to you
Best wishes
Diane

Re: I Think it's adeno....

I'm hoping for the best..I feel so bloated and full all of the time... I also forgot to mention that my mother had a 14 pound tumor removed about 20 years ago...the tumor was on the outside of her uterus and wrapped around certain organs..it was not cancerous though...thank god...But I do have to say that it has me worried about myself as well...
Today Im going to call a doctor in San Antonio and get a second opinion...It's been 3 years since the last diagnosis and I'm tired of all of the pain and fatigue...
I hope you heal and feel better...No more heavy lifting I know its hard for us to let chores go even when we are sick...
I guess I will know more after I see the doctor...
The only other thing I'm paranoid about is my insurance denying coverage...Ive read several posts stating that they've had issues with their insurance denying coverage completely or denying coverage until all these other measures or treatments are taken...Who has the money for all of that..
Thanks for replying...and I hope you feel better soon...Let me know how it goes and how you feel a few weeks from now...also, did you have an abdominal hysterectomy?

Re: I Think it's adeno....

My doctor made me nervous when he said it's considered an elective, but it went through insurance good.

Re: I Think it's adeno....

Hi Krys....I recently had a TAH due to adeno. What you're experiencing sounds exactly like what I experienced.
It's funny; for years I just thought it was severe PMS and then that I was one of those unlucky women who had heavy periods. However, over the last year, it became so serious that not only was I in pain every day, experiencing horrific migraines and mood swings and fatigue, but during my cycle, I was assured that embarassment would come to call in the form of having to completely change my pants at least once and sometimes twice a day. When you get out of the shower and blood is running down your legs even with a tampon in, you know something's wrong.

I had a D&C and hysteroscopy in September to try and slow the bleeding, and then was put on the mini pill. Guess what? Heavier periods after the D&C! The doctor suggested depo to try and stop my periods, but he said that was just a bandaid to buy me some time. I was lucky enough to be able to go through with the surgery about two weeks after having the depo shot. An opportunity presented itself and I took it, because I might have stopped the bleeding, but 5 day migraines and abdominal pain were pushing me to the brink.

I did read that adeno is actually considered a condition where hysterectomy is not considered elective. My insurance company asked the typical questions, but everything went through okay.

No one should have to live with this. My TAH has been a godsend. I hope you can find relief.
