Underwear to wear for a vertical incision?

What kind of underwear should I buy to wear for post-op? I have bought myself a pair of larger loose pants but don't know what kind of underwear I should buy as I am having a TAH with a vertical incision which is will be higher up than most I am sure? Any suggestions from those who have had verticial incision TAHs??

Re: Underwear to wear for a vertical incision?

Yep, I had a vertical incision from belly button to groin - the first few days in the hospital very simply didn't wear any underwear. My incision was held together by metal staples, which means it is ruched up and bumpy for the first week or so, so underwear can be a bother. The best thing I can recommend is very high "granny" underwear that come up over your belly button, because 4 weeks post op I still find that anything coming across the belly where the scar is leaves and indentation and is incomfortable. Hope this helps, best of luck with your op.

Re: Underwear to wear for a vertical incision?

I had a TVH, but a year later I had a surgery which required a vertical incision that ran from breastbone to pubic bone. The first several days I did not wear anything under my hospital gowns. Then I wore low cut bikinis in a size larger than my normal size - I couldn't stand to have anything touching the staples. I also wore loose dresses and jumpers rather than having to deal with a waistband.

Best of luck with your surgery!

-Linda

Re: Underwear to wear for a vertical incision?

My TAH & BSO was a vertical cut. I felt great in granny panties which a bought a size larger because I didn't want anything tight resting on the incision/stitches. I'm 11 weeks post op and really just now able to wear like bikinis, but sometimes they are still uncomfortable since my incision is really tender at times.

I also went commando for awhile postop, even outside of the hospital. Then yes granny panties or even maternity undies will work.

Re: Underwear to wear for a vertical incision?

Hi,

I had a TAH/BSO with a vertical incision on 1/22/10. I bought the Hanes full brief at Wal-Mart in a size larger than I usually wear. The elastic comes up above your belly button and they are very comfortable.

grany cotton high edged pants, may be during the days in hospital with tubes coming out of you , you will not wear a thing , after the tubes go after 2 days start with the cottons comfortable loose with bigger size than yours, nothing to stress your swelly belly

Re: Underwear to wear for a vertical incision?

I wish I had thought of this before hand. I too didn't go with anything for the first week, than had to wear something. I dug out my old undies and had to cut the elastic band on them and that worked fine. Probably didn't wear my regulars for 2-3 weeks.
