Can prolapse return 6 months post op?

I had an abdominal cystocele/rectocele repair and partial hysterectomy, the "gold standard" of pelvic floor repair, I was told 6 months ago. My surgeon said I could even lift weights again. I've been careful with activity, did some walking, yoga and gentle cross country skiing (nordic). After skiing 2 weeks ago the next day I noticed alot of pressure and after urninating, felt something come down. It feels just like the prolapse is back! I have an appt. March 9. Has anyone had the experience of a bladder repair failing after this long? I had alot of problems with the healing process of the bladder, pressure, pain with increased activity until recently and then this! Any info is greatly appreciated.

Re: Can prolapse return 6 months post op?

I am only 5 weeks post op but sadly from what I have read here on the forum it sounds as if your prolapse could have recurred. There are all too many women who have recurrences after only a matter of months. Good luck for Mar 9th! C

Re: Can prolapse return 6 months post op?

Hi - I don't specifically know the answer to your question, however I tend to believe yes. I had my hysterectomy for a prolapsed uterus. I waited until 9 months post op to start really exercising. I joined a gym and started working with weight machines. I am 46, slender and in relatively good health. I started using the machines which worked my core. Shortly after doing that, I noticed the same type of feeling that I felt when my uterus prolapsed (something falling out down there). I had pelvic pain that at the time I couldn't figure out. My muscles weren't "sore" from working out so I didn't think my pelvic pain was from working out. In hind-sight what me and the docs think happened was I was bearning down too much while using the weight machines and that bearing down made a mild rectocele worse and now more noticeable. I am still going through testing to confirm all this. I have since stopped all weight bearing type exercises and went back to brisk walking/jogging. I have learned that I can't lift or use those muscles down there like I used to. I don't know if my story helps you, but when you said you went skiing and then felt something, it kind of sounded like what happened to me. I'm sending you BIG HUGS!

Re: Can prolapse return 6 months post op?

Read my sig - I've had the "gold Standard" of procedures.. and even a second one use a couple months back. I KNOW my rectocele has already returned and my bladder - I can feel that has returned too. I think the majority of repairs are successful.. I happen to be one that isn't that fortunate.. I think it's MY body, and not the fault of the doctor(s) who I researched.. and they are TOP in their fileds (uro-gyn and colorectal surgeon)

Re: Can prolapse return 6 months post op?

Thanks for your replies! I saw my surgeon today and I do not have a prolapse. I am a more sensitive person and create alot of tension in my pelvic floor which created the same sensations I had before. I wonder if there's such a thing as a phantom bulge! He said some women come in complaiining of a bulge and there's nothing there. I am seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist and she can help me with the balance of my muscles and getting stronger. The surgery I had is the best because the cervex is anchored to the tailbone and will not fall down, while a repair with a hysterectomy is more likely to fail. Wish I had known about this website sooner, I could have used your support. Thanks!

Re: Can prolapse return 6 months post op?

Try the PT, but if you feel you have a prolapse, then continue to seek medical help. You know your body best. I had mesh and was told that my pain wasn't from the mesh, but was a result of me being a tense person (I'm in the military), so I was scheduled to do PT. I had already been told by my primary care physician that the mesh felt "wadded" up, so I decided to go to a different gyn and behold, the mesh was wrinkled up, eroded, and was being rejected by my body. I had surgery almost four weeks ago for removal and yippee, life seems to be becoming normal again. I am so glad I sought a second opinion instead of being out all kinds of money for PT and still having to eventually having to have surgery.
