Blood transfusion before surgery?

Hello everyone! I'm new here, but have been doing tons of reading on this site for the past couple of days. I've learned soooo much, and am really thankful that I found it!

Sooo......My story is that I'm scheduled for a LSH on March 9th. (My GYN didn't call it an LSH...he said it would be a hysterectomy to remove my uterus laparoscopically, and he would be leaving my ovaries and cervix. I'm assuming that's an LSH.) Anyway, the reason for the surgery is at least 3 fibroids that have been causing very heavy bleeding. The heavy bleeding has caused severe anemia, and my blood count is very low, so my doc said in order to do the surgery, he would have to do a blood transfusion first. I'll have to stay in the hospital the night before the scheduled LSH to recieve the transfusion.

Just wondering if anyone else has had to have a transfusion before their surgery, and what it was like. Thanks ~ Crisd

I don't know about the blood transfusion before surgery or anything like that, but I wanted to send you some encouraging thoughts. Please Keep us posted on how you are doing, and feeling.

Re: Blood transfusion before surgery?

Yes I just had a transfusion a few weeks ago. My surgery isn't until April so it wasn't the night before though
I went in the morning and they did a blood test for antibodies, and bloodtyping. Then they hooked me up to an IV with a drip from the IV bag.
It didn't hurt except for the first poke then it just takes a long time. Bring lots of reading material and enjoy if you can, by putting your feet up and thinking how much better you will feel.
Before my transfusion I had a crushing headache and I hurt all over, after the next day , I went to the Mall for 4 hrs and shopped with my daughter who was getting married in a week. I had more energy than she did.

Re: Blood transfusion before surgery?

I had to have blood transfusions a few years ago for a bleeding stomach ulcer.
They hook it up like an IV and it might be a small prick
when the nurse first starts it like when they draw blood.

So no it doesn't hurt , it just takes a while, I agree bring some reading material or have a friend or family member visit with you.

Sending you gentle hugs,

Re: Blood transfusion before surgery?

I have never had a blood transfusion before a surgery, but I ended up having one after surgery to remove my gal bladder. wasn't awake when they started it (because I crashed during surgery and they had to start it then) but I remember seeing it when I woke up and it looks mostly like an IV in your arm, only a big bigger cord running from bag to your arm. It felt the same as an IV too. Didn't hurt.

Good luck with your surgery.
