Recurring sinus/urinary tract infections

I just finished my Augmentin for a low-grade sinus infection, and now I have a UTI. This in my second sinus infection and third UTI this year. My PCP asked me if cancer runs in my family. Great...something else to keep me awake at night! I've read some older posts that mention how low estrogen dries your mucus membranes, leaving you prone to infection. I've been taking 1 mg Estrace for approximately one year (since having my ovaries removed). I've never had my hormone levels checked, so I have an appointment on March 15 to discuss this with my PCP. I'm curious if any of you have had a similar experience. I HATE taking all this antibiotic because of the risk of resistance, so I'd like to prevent the infections rather than simply treating them once they develop. Plus I just want to feel better!! Thanks in advance for sharing your stories!

Re: Recurring sinus/urinary tract infections

Are you using any vaginal estrogen? Many of us need supplemental vaginal estrogen - without it we get yeast infections, UTIs and dryness. Perhaps ask your dr about adding Vagifem, Estrace or Premarin cream. I'd also ask to get levels checked, including thyroid at your visit. Good luck.

Re: Recurring sinus/urinary tract infections

Thank you for responding. I mentioned Vagifem to her, and she seems to think it is in place of and not in addition to the Estrace. My impression, and what you imply, is that it is in addition to the oral estrogen. I plan to talk with her about the Vagifem again. I'll mention the thyroid, too. I've read in other posts that thyroid can be a culprit with HRT. My skin is really dry, but I live in Northern New England where the winters are very cold and very dry.

Re: Recurring sinus/urinary tract infections

I have read up to 40% of us need the vaginal estrogen in addition to the systemic. Hope you get it solved soon! Adding a humidifier to our house helped me with my sinus issues - somewhat.

Re: Recurring sinus/urinary tract infections

hmmm...

I have had sinus issues in past when estrogen too low. I also found that I seemed to be allergic to estrace (and all oral bios) or something, because i'd end up with a bloody nose, snoring loudly and just generally congested and swollen.
