Foods

So I went for my pre-op today and I had been told to "eat lightly" the day before surgery. I asked what exactly that meant and I was told to eat easily digestible foods. I know soup and jello. Can anyone give me other ideas? I was told to stay away from dairy, meats, salads and spicy foods. So there goes the yogurt, pudding and sandwiches I was thinking about. Should I also stay away from bananas and apples? At least it isn't a liquid diet or something.

It's almost my day!!!

Re: Foods

I would think that they mean ..soup, broth, juice , jello ???

I ate normally the day before my surgery and did fine though so I'm not sure what they want you to do LOL!

Good Luck with your surgery!!

Re: Foods

I ate normally too but if I was you, I'd probably do something like, a peanut butter sandwich, lentil soup, some broccoli with a light dressing, etc. Things that still have nutritional value but yet aren't so tough on the tummy.

Re: Foods

After having several surgeries and procedures, I would suggest that you eat things like soups, jellos, bananas, toast with little amount of butter/margarine on it, liquids like juices probably like apple or apple blends, cranberry, broth, etc. I know that what I did was to eat early in the day and I ate things like ice cream, yogurt and pudding early but after lunch went to the soups and liquids. I would be very careful about eating fruits, vegetables, meats, etc. Those are harder to digest. They probably want you to have an empty stomach so surgery will be easier. I would think that they could give you a list. I would not hesitate to call them up and ask for more specifics. They probably have a dietician who can help you out. If they are saying this, they can come up with a list. Ask them so you do know. Believe me, you would rather know than find out that what you chose, was the wrong thing and it made surgery tougher. Saying eat lightly is not very specific. I would bet that their dietician can tell you what they mean. Good luck with this.

Re: Foods

I was told just no food after midnight...but decided just to not over eat during the day. I had oatmeal, yogurt and for dinner eggs and grits. Main thing is after surgery.I have been eating soft foods soups, yogurt fruit so far. I had a TVH 3/9 and my dr. suggested miralax and colace the first week or so. And so far that is working...keeping everything soft and smooth...=D!!

Re: Foods

you dont want to eat anything that will slow down the "process" as you will have troubles with your digestive tract after surgery. i.e. stay away from bananas as they "bind" you up.

I would also think not eating a huge meal before hand (right before your midnight deadline) so as to not have that sitting in your tract for the same reason stated above.

Also, you might want to double check your instructions; my instructions before my "exploratory" stated nothing after midnight, but what my DBF noticed, and I did not, was that is also stated no SOLID food after 8 pm and NOTHING after midnight. Yours may not state that, but like I said, mine did and I read right over it, if it wasnt for Tim, I was gonna eat after 8 pm.

Best Wishes

Re: Foods

I am on "clear liquid" the day before my surgery. There goes the idea of meeting the girls from work for a "lunch date" the day before surgery.

Re: Foods

Thanks for all the great ideas. I was just not looking forward to broth and jello only! LOL. But hey I can do anything for one day to make sure this takes place. Happy recovery everyone!!
