Emotional/Mental complications

I think I'm losing my mind...

I had a TAH on March 11. Home after 3 days and things are going fine. I was taking Vicodin every 4 hours and doing fine on it. About 3 days ago, I decided to start weening myself off of it and feel like I'm going crazy every sense.

I've been taking one at bedtime, just to get me through any pain I might experience, but about 2 hours after taking it I wake up drenched in sweat. I feel like people are standing and looking at me. I feel like I can't catch my breath. I feel paranoid. Last night, I was hysterical and had to have my husband turn the TV on because I was afraid of the dark and being alone.

Anyone else ever felt like this? Is it coming off of the narcotic? The new hormone patch?

Please help before I lose my mind!!

Re: Emotional/Mental complications

I'm so sorry you are having such a hard time! That must be very scary for you. i would definitely call your Dr. about this. Anything is possible when you have been on narcotics and also your hormones may be causing some of this too. Might
need to wean slower or change to something else for awhile...make that call so you don't have to go through the weekend with all the anxiety!
Prayers and Hugs!

Re: Emotional/Mental complications

Oh honey, I am so sorry you are having a rough time! I would certainly call your doctor, I am sure they have heard it ALL and will know what to do, No need for you to suffer like this!!!

Hang in there honey, hormones and such are really wacky some times. ALso, you might be having sort of an emotional "release" now that it is all over you know what I mean? I find that before something serious like surgery I work myself up into a tight ball of tizzy and then afterwards I have to just sort of "break down" and cry and let my body relax again. NOt sure anyone else is like that, but I know I am!

Re: Emotional/Mental complications

I had bad dreams on Vicodin. I would lengthen the time between them (like go from 4 to 6 hours, then 8, etc.) I did this then haven't taken any almost all week. I feel much better off them, & am now going to see an acupuncturist to help with residual pain.

Re: Emotional/Mental complications

I'm not on any pain meds any more nor am I on any HRT, I have close to the same thing. I'm blaming it on the hormones since I was fine until November, that's when all crap hit the fan with the mental crap. I had something like postpartum, then paranoia, feels like someone's watching me at times, I was wondering if I were possessed at times. I even feel like I'm someone else at times also. I was on an antidepressant, but it wasn't working. I am taking B12 and 5-HTP now. It's working way better. Doctor said it will all pass, hope it does soon.

Please call the If it's the pain medication, your doctor can have you try something else without such upsetting side effects. Keep us posted, okay?

Re: Emotional/Mental complications

I think what I'm gonna do is NOT take a vicodin before bed. Just the Ibuprofen (sp?) the doc gave me. It's usually about 2 hours after taking the vicodin, so it has to be related. Will let you know!

Re: Emotional/Mental complications

I also had bad dreams on Vicodin...they were more like out of body experiences than true nightmares but I did not like the way they made me feel at all! My doctor changed them with no problem...and even made a joke about "people pay big bucks to feel like that!" lmao. Good luck I hope u get it all sorted out

Re: Emotional/Mental complications

Yesterday I took my last Vicodin at 3pm. Nothing buy OTC pain meds after that. Slept just fine.

Re: Emotional/Mental complications

I also had problems with Vicodin. One week post-surgery, I went to using two Tylenol, 600 mg each, and it works wonderfully. It does a good job of taking are of the pain and no more weird dreams.
