Testosterone Compound

So who is on this and how does it work for you? I'm going to start on it if the nurse practioner can ever explain to the pharmacist what she wants. He tells me she wants him to put so much testosterone in 30 syringes (without needles) and them I'm to mix it each day in some vaseline to apply!!! Wierdest think I've ever heard of and that is not 'making a compound' - that's having me do it. Vaseline??? No way.....talk about ruined clothes.

They originally called it in to a drugstore who specializes in compounds and they told me this morning it would be a cream. But I'm not going to do business with them, simply because even though I know my insurance might not pay for any of it, their policy is to not even try......and they are rude.....the prescription got called in wrong Friday and the nurse called in a new one today. The pharmacist told me if I transfer it they would only transfer the incorrect one and that they had talked to the doctor and got specific instructions but would not pass those instructions on.........and gee whiz you would think they would know by the prescription they are dealing with a menopausal, hot flashing, night sweating, moody woman!!!

If you use it, does it come in a jar or a tube or this syringe thingy I described? Does it help? Anyone lost any weight? How long till it helps libido?? Would you recommend it or do you hate it??

Re: Testosterone Compound

My compounded testosterone comes in a small jar with a small opening at the top, I push on the bottom and the cream comes out of the small opening. I've also had it come in just a jar that I would insert an open ended syringe in.

It is not unusual for compounded creams to come in open ended syringes. My last refill for bi est came that way. However; you should not have to mix it with anything, it should come pre mixed in the base. You can usually ask the pharmacist as there are many different types of bases that they can mix it with.

I don't blame you for changing pharmacies. I've been thru a few since I started using compounded hormones. I've learned to ask the staff questions and if I don't care for their customer service skills or knowledge level I move on. There are too many pharmacies out there to waste my time on one that isn't going to be helpful.

When I first started on the compounded hormones I found a gem of a pharmacist. She was very helpful in helping my doctor write out the correct script for me. She also helped when I was having problems. It was a very sad day for me when she sold her business.

I would keep looking. Check your local yellow pages for pharmacies in your area. You can also check here www.iacprx.org for pharmacies in your area.

Re: Testosterone Compound

Thanks Kim. I think my CVS pharmacist will be able to do it if he can just talk to the right person at the doctor's office....he needs to know what % testosterone they want me to have.

But............since you are on it.......has it helped you and if so how? And are there any side effects to be aware of (I seem to be a side effect magnet on just about everything I take)? I'm also wondering if it will help at all with weight loss. Read somewhere it gives you energy and I have none. Some days I feel like I'm a 70 year old woman instead of 53 years old.......which really isn't old in today's world. In fact my 70+ year old mom in law can run circles around me. So the energy sounds great and the old libido. I can't believe how much that has changed for me, and I'm pretty much still a 'newlywed', will be 7 years in July.

I'm hopeful but adding testosterone (which I did want to try) and the progesterone are new to me. I did get prog injections monthly for a while after the hysterectomy to help fight off the rest of the endometriosis.I always worry about the big C, but now its not 'just' hot flashes and night sweats, menopause seems to have attacked me with a vengeance. I even get 'spells' that last a few days to a week, where my joints hurt so bad I can barely go up and down my stairs at home. Since I took a 2 month break off estrogen, I feel pretty sure that's what did that. So many things. I'm glad I found this site, lots of good information and friendly ladies - we really are sisters. I just never dreamed there was so much I needed to know.......thought I was an 'old hand' on hysterectomies and menopause. I really appreciate your posts and advice Kim!!

Re: Testosterone Compound

I just started today. My "compound" is in three tiny syringes -- I'm supposed to apply 1cc every day -- this is one months supply. The pharmacist spent time with me and showed me where to apply it to areas on my arms, my upper breasts and thighs, working from the top of my body down. She was wonderful and explained that sometimes it takes a few months until they can get the dosage right. I haven't had any libido or energy since my surgery, seven years ago, and always associated it with menopause and/or depression which I take medication for. It never dawned on me that this could be hormonal -- I'm keeping my fingers crossed & hope that this is the missing link I've been looking for for a very very long time. Good luck to you!!!

Re: Testosterone Compound

I'd like to know if it works too. I'm hypothyroid, haven been for years. Since my TAH my hair is dry as straw, I have no libidio and can be totally overwhelemed when the hot flashes are upon me. No matter how much I sleep, I am exhausted.

Re: Testosterone Compound

I could barely pull myself up the steps at night to go to bed I was so exhausted, my hair was falling out (I use the vivelle dot patch for estrogen replacement - the highest dose) and I had not 1 thought about sex in ages. After reading a book I looked at my blood results and I had a minus number in the free testosterone result column. I brought it to my doctor's attn and she prescribed a sub-lingual (fancy word for under the tongue) compounded testosterone. It is cherry flavored and tiny - kinda like a wax pellet. I let it melt under my tongue while I cook dinner every night and oh my it has changed my world. Just ckd the blood again and it is still too low so dr upped the dosage. Dr referred me to a Walgreens that does compounding and my prescription plan pays for part of it. I end up paying about $31.00 a month out of pocket for it but worth every penny. My feeling of well being lifted immediately and after 4 months my hair is thicker. My husband looked at me after about a week and told me that the twinkle was back in my eye for the first time since surgery. So - 3 things - 1) look at your results yourself - I always ask for a copy and ask questions 2) educate yourself - read a book - there are a lot of them out there and 3) Find a doctor that will help you - my surgeon refused my request for bio-identicals. Actually she scoffed at me and scolded me when I asked for them. I left her office and worked with my primary who happens to take bio-identicals ( I had no idea). Just wanted to offer you an alternative to creams and what you are doing. Also - I run into so many hyster sisters that have no idea what their results are. It is your body - get involved! Good luck!

Re: Testosterone Compound

Hey Susan, Just wondered how the testosterone is doing for you? After feeling like I've been literally raked over the coals to get it and was expecting it to be ready today - it wasn't. But Walgreens will have it ready this evening or tomorrow. I sure have learned a lot about drugstores thru this ordeal. Really hoping you have good news to share!! I hope you say you are full of energy and feeling better.

Re: Testosterone Compound

Hi Bonna.

I wish I had wonderful news to report, but as of today...I don't feel any different than before I started using the testosterone. It's only been a week, so I'm going to relax and give it more time, and the pharmacist told me that in many instances they have to adjust the compound.

Good luck to you...Happy Easter...and let's stay in touch.

Susan
