Question Regarding Pathology reports?

Hi Ladies,
Is it standard practice that the parts they remove from you (Uterus, ovaries, tubs) are all sent to pathology? If so, how do you
get the results and how long does it take to get the results?
All of you are so helpful. My LAVH/BSO A&P repair and Sling are
scheduled for 10/31/01.

Thanks again for all of your help and information. And good luck
and best wishes for a painless speedy recovery for all of you LIW.

PJM,

I do believe that everything goes to pathology and should be back by the time you go for your first post-op visit or maybe sooner. You can always place a call to your doc and ask about it if you are concerned and anxious to get the results.

Best wishes on the 23rd! You'll do just fine. Hang in there--the waiting, as I'm sure you've heard, is the very worst part!

Question Regarding Pathology reports?

Everything that is removed MUST go to Pathology and be tested. When the doctor came in the following morning for his rounds he told me that everything was benign---no maligancy. I did find out the degree of adenomyosis and endometriosis that I had. Pathology is pretty efficient.

Question Regarding Pathology reports?

Hi Jean-Pam,
I'm right behind you on Nov. 1.
If your doctor does not plan to send the removed organs to pathology, request/demand that it is done. Some labs take longer than others. In the past my doc has had results in a week, so I imagine while know at my post-op visit. While nothing has been positive so far, it's good to know for sure. Jan

Question Regarding Pathology reports?

Request copies of your hospital chart (operative report and pathology report especially) from the hospital records dept. There will be a charge, and it may take several weeks, but it's good to keep the records, and very informative for you to read. You have a right to see your records.

Question Regarding Pathology reports?

Everything...even fluids suctioned out of your body...goes to pathology. I was able to secure a copy of my pathology report when I requested my medical file from my surgeons office. It was free of charge and available about a month later...Rosa

Thanks for the info

Thank you all for the reply's. I am not worried about the pathology report results as I have had no previous bad pap test results. I was just curious if this was a standard procedure. I
think it is important that they do this. Best wishes to all of you.
And happy Birthday ladies.

Question Regarding Pathology reports?

My doctor had my surgical and pathology reports at my first post-op check up (one week) and made copies for me.

It's a good practice to keep copies of all those reports in a safe place. They are very useful for later reference.

Pathology

Thanks for the info, gals........ I figured that organs as well as fluids would make a pathology trip but just had no idea as to the waiting period. I'll ask about that right away.
My last pap was "atypical" but I have no results yet from my most recent one of 2 weeks ago.
I'm standing by here, a nervous wreck (13 days away.....) and with a God-awful cold........ . Feel like crying but I can't; I'm at work. I'll wait until I get home......
Love to call, Chris

Yes, everything removed is sent to Pathology

so don't worry on that score. That does include the uterus, ovary/ovaries, tubes, an fibroids removed, adhesions removed, tissue removed etc.

Result times vary. If there is a concern about a possible cancer, the GYN will have a frozen section done during the surgery and a Pathologist will look at it immediately with a prelim finding given to the surgeon while you are still in the OR. If everything looks fine to your GYN then the "bits" are sent to the Path lab for microscopic review. The findings can take up to a week. Depends on the hospital, staffing etc. Your GYN will tell you what he/she saw during the surgery either in Recovery or the next day/prior to your discharge home.

By all means ask for a copy of the Path report if you would like to have it/read it for yourself. Ask the GYN office for a copy at your first office visit post-op. If you have a fax machine at home, you can always call and ask the office to fax it to you. They will do so but not til after the GYN reads it first.
