Cervicitis and endocervicitis

Okay I am a little upset now. I had a TLH done on 3/10. I didn't hear anything from my doctor on my test results. Which I thought no news is good news. I do go on Monday for my 4 week post op. I received the EOB from the Insurance and it has a code listed with Cervicitis and endocervicitis. When I read up on these it says that is commonly caused by an STD. I have always gone for my yearly annual since I was about 21 y/o. I had an infertility workup. I also had a hystroscopy and laporoscopy in 2001. No one has every mentioned anything to me. I have been married for almost 12 years and there has been no cheating. OMG I do not want my husband to hear this and think the worst. I mean what would you think if you heard that your spouse has this??? Please if anyone has had any experience with this or can calm me down please help me out.

Re: Cervicitis and endocervicitis

Big ((((HUGS)))) - deep breath - hold - and release slowly! step back and lets look at this logically. Just because it is listed on the insurance co report does NOT mean you, or your hubby, had an STD. It may simply be one of those "this is the closest code we can use" kind of things

A little quick research and here is what I found from one of the leading medical clinics in the country!

From the Mayo Clinic site - other possible causes of cervicitis:

Bacterial overgrowth. An overgrowth of bacteria that normally appear in the vagina (bacterial vaginosis) also can lead to cervicitis.

Allergic reactions. An allergy, either to contraceptive spermicides or to latex in condoms, may lead to cervicitis.

See, there ARE other reasons for cervicitis, so please dont drive yourself crazy over this. Best course of action is to get on the phone to your doc and ask him/her for an explanation - I am sure they can put your mind at ease.

Re: Cervicitis and endocervicitis

I am not finding what you are saying to be true at all, Becky. STDs are only one thing that can can cause that. There are many other things as well - vaginal infection, childbirth, abortion, or surgery on the uterus - to mention a few. It an be chronic or acute. It sounds like you've had some work done in that area before, which might have caused it, or it could just have been a simple acute infection. Or, like mentioned, that's just what they coded it. Doctors need to do that all of the time, esp if insurance pays for things in certain ways.

Rather than hypothesizing, call your doctor. Breathe. It's okay. And my goodness, please don't trust the internet as the health authority, you'' scare yourself half crazy for what is likely no good reason.

Take care.

Re: Cervicitis and endocervicitis

Becky, Here what I found on the web copied word for word. Hope this puts your mind at ease as well as your hubby's.
Inflammatory Disease of Cervix, Endocervicitis
HEALTH GUIDE INDEX / C / CERVICITIS

WHAT IS IT?
Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix (the neck and outlet of the womb). Cervicitis may be caused by a vaginal infection, a sexually transmitted disease (such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, or genital herpes), or injuries to the cervix from childbirth, abortion, or surgery on the uterus. Cervicitis can be an acute or chronic condition.

Re: Cervicitis and endocervicitis

baxter25,

It will be OK. The medical codes don't always fit what Dr's now know. I just saw my Dr for my first follow-up today, and I too had endocervicitis. What she said was this:

1. These were inflammatory, abnormal cells.
2. They were not cancerous.
3. We have no idea why they flared up or what they were from.
4. We have no idea what they would have become.

I came online to post, and read what you said. That prompted me to research. The funny thing is, I have been tested for STDs MILLIONS of times, even though my hubby and I are manogomous. When I was in college I was tested several times, and it ALWAYS came back negative. The Dr's would treat me with a generic antibiotic, and send me home. I repeatedly answered questions about my discharge, and took it as, "Normal for me." Here's the interesting thing, I have a latex allergy and didn't know it until 5 years ago. Think about all the times Drs used latex gloves on me! I just keep thinking about all the times we used condoms and we shouldn't have been! 10 years ago, the Drs thought this was caused by STDs, but they were wrong. They now know we are MUCH more complex than that. Who knows why you had it, but the good news is, IT"S GONE!!!!

Have a great day!
Blessings!
