Pap Smear Reflex HPV

After my hysterectomy last September the results were: Invasive endocervical adenocarcinoma, villoglandular pattern, grade 2/4, Extent of tumor invasion 1B1--NO malignancy in 19 lymph nodes that were checked. Tumor involves upper endocervix and extends into lowere uterine segment. There was no squamous dysplasia seen. I see nothing on the report about hpv. At my last follow-up I noticed on the report that my doctor had done a "pap smear thin prep reflex hpv"......can anyone shed any light on what this means? Wouldn't the hpv virus have already been diagnosed after all the paps and tests I have been through? Or is this something that can happen at any time? Thanks for your help!

Re: Pap Smear Reflex HPV

It looks like this is the test itself. More details:

Hopefully this is just part of your follow up? Maybe ask if there was something that caused them to do this test, or if it's routine for you. Let us know when you find out.

Meanwhile, glad you are healing!

Re: Pap Smear Reflex HPV

this is the description of the test that the doctor has requested....it's a pap smear where they will also do the hpv test if the pap shows abnormal results. having a persistent 'active' hpv infection is what is the causative agent for dysplasia/cancer. you can still have an active hpv infection after your cancer diagnosis and after a hysterectomy. if they had analyzed the tissue they removed in your surgery for hpv, they would have found it but that's not a common part of the pathology during a hysterectomy. hpv is the causative agent for both squamous cervical cancers and adenocarcinoma cervical cancers. the cervical cancers not caused by hpv are the rare ones, accounting for less than 1percent of cervical cancers.

hope that helps.
