Vaginal discharge with odor-9 days post op
At about 5 days post-op I noticed that the slight bloody discharge I was having was replaced by a substantial amount of watery-pinkish discharge whenever I got up and moved around. It was enough that I had to change a pad several times a day. My doctor said it is normal. The discharge is lessened now but has a bad odor. Has anyone else experienced this?

I Had a TVH on april 7th and I have had that same discharge since I came home, I was in the ER on tuesday nite because I had a UTI and I ask the dr about all the discharge and he said it was normal, but if it got a smell to it to go see my OB dr or come straight to the ER because it mean't I had a infection, so you should get it checked out very soon before it goes any futher!!Gook Luck and keep us posted!!

Re: Vaginal discharge with odor-9 days post op
Hi zoe, thanks for responding. I was doing some reading around the site here and found the "Hysterectomy Checkpoints" link up near the top left. I found the following in the "Post Op Weeks 1 and 2" section. It made me feel a lot better. I did have a rectocele repair as well, so that means more stitches.
"Its only been a few weeks since my hysterectomy but I have an odd odor. What is this and what causes it?
In early post-op weeks, many women experience an unusual or offensive vaginal odor that can be quite unsettling. Whether you had a vaginal or abdominal hysterectomy, this odor is likely caused by dissolving stitches, along with old blood and other fluids in the abdominal cavity. Noticing an odor seems to particularly happen with surgeries that involve anterior and posterior repairs because of the additional stitches from these procedures. Other concerns woman have may include an odor in the urine which may be caused by medications and/or anesthesia.
It is important to be aware that a strong, particularly a “fishy” vaginal odor, accompanied by a discharge may indicate a vaginal infection, which needs to be promptly treated by your doctor. When in doubt, it’s safest to contact your doctor’s office to discuss the changes you are experiencing.
If not before, be sure to remember to mention any unusual odor to your doctor at your six-week post-op check-up. If there is an infection present, your doctor can treat it at that time.
