Walking after surgery

I recently had abdominal surgery. Yuck!!

Question---when did you all start walking after your surgeries? And, how far?
I started at 4 weeks but because of soreness didn't do much. Today, I'm at 4 1/2 weeks and walked a mile.

Need answers, please.

Re: Walking after surgery

Yuk is right! I know what you mean!

Everyone is certainly different. Sounds like you are doing great. At almost 5 weeks, I am walking 2 miles per day whether I feel like it or not.

Still feel pulling and soreness at the incision, but I keep on truckin!

thanks for the reply. You are doing great. I will have to walk even if I don't feel like it.

Re: Walking after surgery

I walked 4 miles today at 17 minutes per mile. I started with 1/2 mile 5 days post op after TAH 4-15 and LSO 4-16. I went 1 mile day 6 then 2 miles at about 22 minutes a mile for a couple days, then 3 for a few days trying to speed up a bit. I am still slightly anemic but was in great shape before surgery.

Re: Walking after surgery

LB123, are you still sore near your incision? You are doing great! I wish I had felt like walking so soon. Are you taking Advil or Tylenol?

Re: Walking after surgery

I started walking as soon as the nurse removed the bandage from my abdominal incision. I haven't walked miles, but I do walk around my block at least twice. Tomorrow, I will be 4 weeks post-op and hope to walk one mile.

Re: Walking after surgery

My goodness! Walking around Walgreen's at 3 days post-op is wonderful!
Today I am one day from being 5 weeks post op and for the first time----I walked a mile around a track.
Like people say, we should all rest in the afternoons.
Good luck!

My incision is a bit sore but I wear baggy shorts when I walk so it doesn't rub. I didn't feel like walking but knew from previous surgeries the sooner I got walking the better I would feel. It really helps the gas and swelling. After that first slow walk I could stand much more erect the next day which made my back feel so much better. The longer I sit, the stiffer and more sore I get so I kept walking the halls in the hospital as soon as I could.

Prior to surgery I worked out and ran 5-6 miles several times a week because I knew it would help in my recovery.

I must have fewer nerve endings in my abdomen because I never had extreme pain and really only needed Tylenol 2 days in the hospital after the stuff with codiene gave me a bad headache.

Even walking slowly you probably covered more ground than you thought if you were moving for 45 minutes! Good for you, and only 3 days out.
