DaVinci now or TAH later?

Hello Ladies,

I have been to two OB Gyn's for my growing fibroids (8cm and 6cm). OB GYN #1 said that hysterectomy was my best option at this point. OB GYN #2 suggested that I wait until the symptoms become unbearable because at menopause the fibroids will shrink naturally. I am forty six years old now, with no hope for menopause in sight.

At this moment in time, OB GYN #2 would use Lupron for 2-3 months, and attempt to do the surgery using DaVinci. He was very clear with me that due to the size of my enlarged uterus, there is a ten percent chance that I will end up with abdominal surgery. Waiting for the fibroids to grow further would certainly ensure the more invasive surgery.

I am very fortunate to not have horrible symptoms from the fibroids. I do have a very enlarged belly, constant pelvic pressure, constipation, and frequent urination. I'm very inclined to go for the surgery now, while DaVinci surgery is likely. I'm just so scared. Am I doing the right thing? Will I regret this? I also keep replaying in my mind - There is a ten percent chance that I will require TAH. I don't ever seem to tell myself that there is a ninety percent chance the surgery will be completed robotically.

I have never had surgery, and if I decide to move forward, how will I live with the worry for months while taking the Lupron?

I know that there must be others out there who have struggled with these issues. Can anyone offer any advice? I have been advised that I am not a good candidate for UAE.

Re: DaVinci now or TAH later?

I had the daVinci . . . recovery hasn't been all wine & roses, but it has been nothing compared to what my Mom went through with a TAH.

My own heavily biased opinion . . . go with the daVinci.

Re: DaVinci now or TAH later?

If the question is which type surgery, I'd say the daVinci is an easier, although still major, surgery. But if the question is, should you have a hyst at all now, that's a more personal decision. Maybe a 3d opinion would help? If its all timing, then you do have time to plan, and arrange time off. You'll have pre surgery jitters no matter when you have surgery, that's kind of a given. Its really more when you feel you've had enough, and are comfortable making a decision. I hope you find peace with whichever decision you make.

Re: DaVinci now or TAH later?

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. Although my fibroids were just a bit bigger. I chose to do Lupron for 3 months and then have the surgery. At my pre-op my doctor was still a bit concerned that the fibroids had not shrunk enough and said we would find in the OR. Fortunately, things went as planned and she was able to go with the daVinci. If you have a choice I would highly recommend it.

Best of luck to you with your decision, it is never an easy one but wishing for a great outcome for you.
